Development of a flashback correlation for burner-stabilized hydrogen-air premixed flames

F. H. Vance et al.

Summary: Hydrogen flames have a higher tendency to flashback compared to methane flames, which can lead to strong thermal stresses in burners and hinder their performance. Studies have shown that traditional flashback correlation methods are not effective in accounting for stretch induced preferential diffusion effects, and a new Karlovitz number definition has been introduced to better understand and predict flashback limits.

Feeding H2-admixtures to domestic condensing boilers: Numerical simulations of combustion and pollutant formation in multi-hole burners

Rachele Lamioni et al.

Summary: Hydrogen can be produced from excess wind and solar power through electrolysis and injected into the natural gas network for storage and distribution. This study investigates the effect of hydrogen addition on combustion process and pollutant emissions in domestic condensing boilers. Simulations are performed to mimic perforated burners commonly found in such appliances, taking into account different hole-to-hole distances and using detailed kinetics. The results show that adding hydrogen to natural gas leads to changes in operating conditions and pollutant emissions, with a positive impact on reducing NO formation.

Hydrogen substitution of natural-gas in premixed burners and implications for blow-off and flashback limits

A. Aniello et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of hydrogen addition on the stability and flashback occurrence of two different multi-perforated premixed burners designed for natural gas. The results show that hydrogen addition increases the blow off resistance of the burners, but also raises the risk of flashback. It is found that the occurrence of flashback is closely related to the surface temperature of the burners.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of hydrogen injection into the natural gas grid on combustion performance. Experimental results show that increasing hydrogen percentage and fuel rich staggering combustion lead to a decrease in NOx and CO2 emissions, an increase in CO and CxHy emissions, and a decrease in thermal efficiency values.
