Experimental comparison of performance and emissions of a direct-injection engine fed with alternative gaseous fuels

Andy Thawko et al.

Summary: This study discusses the performance and emissions of a direct-injection spark-ignition engine using hydrogen, hydrogen-rich reformate, and methane. The research reveals that the reformate fuel results in the highest total particle number concentration due to its longer injection duration. An optimal hydrogen injection strategy is identified to minimize particle number emission. Additionally, the overall system thermal efficiency is found to be higher in the engine running on reformate compared to hydrogen.

Modeling and parametric study of the performance-emissions trade-off of a hydrogen Wankel rotary engine

Huaiyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of intake port closing (IPC) timing and exhaust port opening (EPO) timing on the performance and emissions of a hydrogen Wankel rotary engine (WRE) using a one-dimensional model. The simulation results show that leakage and crevice reduce the indicated mean effective pressure, while crevice has a smaller impact on volumetric efficiency compared to leakage. Advancing the IPC increases in-cylinder mass and indicated mean effective pressure, but also leads to higher relative NOx emissions. In contrast, the effects of EPO timing on performance and emissions are reversed.

Influence of the equivalence ratio on the knock and performance of a hydrogen direct injection internal combustion engine under different compression ratios

Yong Li et al.

Summary: This study found that a high compression ratio can significantly amplify the effect of the equivalence ratio on combustion and knock. For a compression ratio of 17.5, knock intensity increases more quickly with the rise in equivalence ratio and is more sensitive to ignition timing. However, at a compression ratio of 11, ignition timing is limited by knock about 4 degrees CA earlier than at a compression ratio of 17.5, resulting in more stable engine performance in the low-knock zone.
