Effect of air flow rate distribution and flowing direction on the thermal stress of a solid oxide fuel cell stack with cross-flow configuration

Ping Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of non-uniform distribution of air inlet flow rate and changes in air flow direction on the thermal stress of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack with a cross-flow configuration. The results show that adjusting the air inlet flow rate profile and flow direction can effectively reduce the thermal stress in the SOFC stack.

Investigation on the ignition delay prediction model of multi-component surrogates based on back propagation (BP) neural network

Yanqing Cui et al.

Summary: A prediction model for the ignition delay of three-component surrogates was established using a BP neural network, showing that a BP neural network with two hidden layers performs better in predicting ignition delay. Through optimization with genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm, a high correlation coefficient was achieved with low mean square error. The analysis of mean impact value revealed the major and minor effects of ambient temperature and molar fraction of iso-octane on ignition delay.

New interconnector designs for electrical performance enhancement of solid oxide fuel cells: A 3D modelling study

Meiting Guo et al.

Summary: This study proposes several unconventional interconnector (IC) designs for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack and studies them numerically. Compared with traditional designs, the new IC design can achieve a more uniform distribution of oxygen in the SOFC cathode, leading to improved performance. This improvement can be attributed to the discrete distribution of ribs, reduction of rib size, and spatial layout arrangement of discrete ribs.

Parametric study of kW-class solid oxide fuel cell stacks fueled by hydrogen and methane with fully multiphysical coupling model

Meiting Guo et al.

Summary: Multiphysics models are important for the design and optimization of solid oxide fuel cells, with computational efficiency improved by symmetry utilization and grid optimization. The model's predictive power is tested against experimental data, and parametric studies show advantages of CH4 and H-2 as fuels for different performance characteristics in kW-class stacks. Insufficient air supply can cause high thermal gradient, and fuel uniformity depends critically on stack design.

Wall-function method used to simplify the solid oxide fuel cell model

Shuanglin Shen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a wall-function method to simplify the SOFC model, which shows similar accuracy to traditional full 3D model but uses fewer mesh elements and solution time. The advantages of the wall-function method include allowing a coarse mesh to reduce computational storage and time significantly, as well as improving model accuracy by introducing other information in wall-functions and denser points in the thickness direction.

Modeling the SOFC by BP neural network algorithm

Shaohui Song et al.

Summary: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are complex systems with coupling of multiple physics fields, making performance prediction difficult and high operation temperature challenging for experimental test. Artificial intelligence technology requires less experimental data for accurate modeling. Experimental results show that BP neural network has optimal prediction accuracy, generalization ability, and testing time.

A novel multi-physics and multi-dimensional model for solid oxide fuel cell stacks based on alternative mapping of BP neural networks

Liming Ba et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a new modeling concept called alternative mapping for solving the complex multi-physics and multi-dimensional properties of SOFC stacks using an artificial neural network. The developed stack model is robust and rapid, with results showing close relationships between different physics and dimensional properties. A fully 3D multi-physics and multi-dimensional dynamic simulation of a SOFC stack is implemented for the first time in this report, showing dynamic behaviors of electric-chemical reactions, gas transport, and heat transfer in various positions and operational conditions.
