A novel selective thermophotovoltaic emitter based on multipole resonances

T. C. Huang et al.

Summary: Thermophotovoltaic systems can increase energy conversion efficiency by utilizing a two-dimensional nanodisks/thin-film metamaterial as a wavelength-selective emitter. The proposed emitter achieves high emittance peaks through electric dipole and anapole modes in silicon nanodisks, and can be tailored easily due to non-dispersive optical constants. Additionally, the coupling between multipole resonances and the bottom tungsten layer induces a magnetic dipolar resonance, leading to sensitive wavelengths and higher emittance.

Selective Thermophotovoltaic Emitter with Aperiodic Multilayer Structures Designed by Machine Learning

Wenbin Zhang et al.

Summary: By utilizing Bayesian optimization, a highly selective thermophotovoltaic emitter with a high figure of merit can be designed to reduce thermal losses and improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells. The efficiency of the TPV system was analyzed, and the thermal stability of the fabricated samples was measured, demonstrating the effectiveness of Bayesian optimization in designing selective TPV emitters. Additionally, the machine-learning-based design of metamaterials can be extended to solve expensive black-box global optimization problems in various field applications.
