Development and characterization of anti-biofilm coatings applied by Non-Equilibrium Atmospheric Plasma on stainless steel

Paula Fernandez-Gomez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anti-biofilm activity of coatings applied on stainless steel commonly used in the food industry. The results showed that coatings consisting of APTES with either TEOS or AA effectively reduced the biofilm formation of Listeria monocytogenes. The physical and chemical characteristics of the coatings, such as surface roughness and hydrophilicity, were found to influence their anti-biofilm activity.

Listeria monocytogenes Biofilms in the Food Industry: Is the Current Hygiene Program Sufficient to Combat the Persistence of the Pathogen?

Tina Mazaheri et al.

Summary: Biofilms in the food industry, particularly those formed by Listeria monocytogenes, pose a significant challenge in terms of eradication and control due to their protective matrix. Various strategies are employed in different food sectors to prevent and combat the spread of these biofilms, with a critical evaluation of sanitization methods being essential for long-term effectiveness. Advances in technology and food safety management systems play a key role in improving control measures against L. monocytogenes.

Unraveling the emergence and population diversity of Listeria monocytogenes in a newly built meat facility through whole genome sequencing

Adrian Alvarez-Molina et al.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and analysis of the food processing environment of a newly opened meat processing facility, identifying an increase in Listeria monocytogenes isolation frequency and sequence type diversity over time. Persistent strains were observed in the environment, suggesting clonal expansion and persistence of certain strains with attenuated virulence potential and plasmid presence. The analysis also showed that ST9 strains isolated were more closely related to European isolates than North American isolates and more frequently linked to meat and pork products in Europe.

Summary: Contamination with the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes may occur in the food processing environment, where different strains of microbial communities can have diverse influences on the presence of L. monocytogenes. Recent advances in sequencing technologies promise new insights into how resident microbiota may impact the presence of L. monocytogenes in food industry environments.

Durability Assessment of a Plasma-Polymerized Coating with Anti-Biofilm Activity against L. monocytogenes Subjected to Repeated Sanitization

Ignacio Muro-Fraguas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the durability of an anti-biofilm plasma-polymerized coating, showing that the coating exhibited enhanced antibacterial effects after sanitization due to the high pH of the disinfecting solution. This pH increase caused deprotonation of carboxylic acid groups in the functional coating, resulting in increased hydrophilicity and a negatively charged surface that prevented bacterial attachment and biofilm formation.
