Effect of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation in additive manufactured nickel-based superalloy Haynes 282: an experiment and crystal plasticity study

Jiahao Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fatigue crack growth behavior of hybrid microstructure Haynes 282 fabricated via PBF-AM. The simulation results showed a consistent influence of grain structure and texture on crack propagation, as was seen in the experiment. The presented modeling approach will facilitate the development of accurate microstructure design in additive manufacturing.

Comparison of full field predictions of crystal plasticity simulations using the Voce and the dislocation density based hardening laws

Chaitali S. Patil et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of the Voce hardening law and dislocation density based hardening law on crystal plasticity simulations of tensile deformation. The results showed that the choice of hardening law influences stress distribution, with average texture characteristics predicted similarly by both laws. However, micro-texture varied with increasing strain.

Experiment and non-local crystal plasticity finite element study of nanoindentation on Al-8Ce-10Mg alloy

Jiahao Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoindentation experiments and crystal plasticity finite element model were used to investigate the single-crystal properties and sensitivity of parameters of cerium and magnesium strengthened aluminum alloys. Satisfactory matching between experiment and simulation was obtained for each individual grain. The dependence of hardness on indent depth, as well as the effect of grain orientation and neighboring grains to nanoindentation behavior, were discussed.

A non-local methodology for geometrically necessary dislocations and application to crack tips

Yilun Xu

Summary: A non-local method for establishing GND based on a non-local domain integral has been developed and validated, showing improved accuracy in predicting material fatigue life. The comprehensive study on non-local domain effect revealed the necessity of applying the non-local GND method, as it resembles experimental observations and enhances stress field predictions compared to local methods.

A Multi-Scale Submodel Method for Fatigue Analysis of Braided Composite Structures

Jincheng Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper develops a multi-scale fatigue analysis method based on sub-models for studying the fatigue damage of braided ceramic matrix composites. By combining the meso-scale cell model and the fatigue failure criterion based on the shear lag theory, the fatigue life of 2D SiC/SiC is analyzed, demonstrating the accuracy of the method. The proposed fatigue analysis method takes into account the damage condition of the meso-structured of composite material and has high calculation efficiency and low requirements for modeling of the macro finite element model, making it suitable for fatigue analysis of CMCs structure.

Summary: This paper introduces a method called WATMUS, which can be used to model the fatigue crack nucleation mechanism of metallic materials at microstructural and structural scales. The method can significantly accelerate the solution of fatigue problems and has achieved good simulation results at multiple spatial scales.
