Stress-dependent opening- and shear-mode propagation behavior of fatigue cracks in ultrafine-grained Cu fabricated by equal channel angular pressing

M. Goto et al.

Summary: Research showed that the surface crack growth direction of ultrafine-grained copper is influenced by the location on the specimen circumference and the stress amplitude in high- and low-cycle fatigue regimes. Under certain conditions, cracks grow inclined or perpendicular to the loading axis, with a significant difference in the angle with respect to the loading axis.

Damage and strengthening mechanisms in severely deformed commercially pure aluminum: Experiments and modeling

Harishchandra Lanjewar et al.

Summary: In this study, an in-depth analysis of the elastoplastic behavior of commercially pure aluminum pre-strained via severe plastic deformation (SPD) and tested in tension was conducted. The microstructures of the tensile samples were found to be influenced by the different stages of treatment, with dislocation strengthening playing a significant role in the fragmentation stage and grain boundary strengthening dominating in the steady-state stage. The evolution of dislocation density was shown to have a prominent effect on material strength and deformation behavior, with potential implications for improving mechanical properties in pre-strained materials.

Grain size effect on tensile deformation behaviors of pure aluminum

B. B. Wang et al.

Summary: Grain refinement is an effective method to enhance the mechanical properties of materials, with the strengthening effect of high angle grain boundaries being almost three times that of low angle grain boundaries. The study classified the Hall-Petch relationships into three stages as the grain size decreased, showing a positive deviation in fine grain regime due to the increased specific surface area of HAGBs. Additionally, the positive deviation in ultrafine grained regime was influenced by an extra dislocation source limited strengthening mechanism up to 29 MPa.
