Phycoremediation: A sustainable alternative in wastewater treatment (WWT) regime

Bhupendra Koul et al.

Summary: Wastewater generated from various sources poses significant threats to the environment and human health. Conventional treatment methods are inefficient, while non-conventional bioremediation techniques offer cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions. Phycoremediation, utilizing algal diversity, shows promise in removing hazardous contaminants and producing value-added products. Future research should focus on developing and conserving hyperaccumulator microalgal strains to achieve sustainable wastewater treatment.

Half of US population exposed to adverse lead levels in early childhood

Michael J. McFarland et al.

Summary: This study investigates the exposure of US children to high levels of lead in early life and its impact on intelligence quotient (IQ). The findings reveal that over 90% of individuals born between 1951 and 1980 had blood-lead levels (BLLs) above 5 pg/dL in early life. However, BLLs have significantly decreased for individuals born after 2001, with levels much lower than 5 pg/dL. The average loss of cognitive ability associated with lead exposure is estimated to be 2.6 IQ points per person.

Investigation of Pb(II) bioremediation potential of algae and cyanobacteria strains isolated from polluted water

W. G. Madusha Lakmali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the Pb(II) removal ability of algae and cyanobacterial species in polluted water bodies. The species Phormidium sp., Monoraphidium sp., and Uronema sp. exhibited high tolerances and showed high removal abilities towards Pb(II), making them potential sorbents for removing Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

Fungal and oomycete pathogens and heavy metals: an inglorious couple in the environment

Joanna Gajewska et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination is a global problem, and microorganisms such as fungi and oomycetes have a relatively high tolerance to these pollutants. HM stress affects their growth, morphology, and oxidative balance, but these pathogens may have detoxification mechanisms that enable their survival in highly HM-polluted environments.

The Ability of Edible Fungi Residue to Remove Lead in Wastewater

Yanyan Jing et al.

Summary: Lead-contaminated wastewater is a common source of heavy metal ion pollution. Agricultural waste edible fungi residue (EFR) was effective in adsorbing Pb(II) ions, with a maximum removal efficiency of 76.97%. Competition of Pb(II) ions for available adsorption sites on EFR limited the maximum removal efficiency.

Batch and Fixed-Bed Biosorption of Pb (II) Using Free and Alginate-Immobilized Spirulina

Maria Villen-Guzman et al.

Summary: The study found that Spirulina has higher removal capacity at pH 5.2 and lower adsorption capacity at higher ionic strength, suggesting ion exchange as a relevant mechanism. Immobilizing Spirulina on alginate beads not only increases adsorption capacity but also overcomes limitations in column systems. Dose-response model was the most appropriate to describe the biosorption process.

Fanny George et al.

Summary: Toxic metals like lead, cadmium, and aluminum can harm health when ingested, with certain bacteria being identified as potential probiotics for intestinal bioremediation of these metals. These bacteria are able to actively or passively modulate the bioavailability of toxins in the gut through interactions with heavy metals.

The cell wall of green microalgae and its role in heavy metal removal

Olivia Spain et al.

Summary: Heavy metals in industrial wastewaters pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Microalgae are increasingly being recognized as potential solutions for removing pollutants through biosorption due to their unique cell wall structure. The review focuses on the composition and structure of microalgae cell walls in heavy metal removal, as well as commonly used models to predict the velocity and capacity of biosorption by microalgae.
