Reducing the Computational Complexity of Wide-Area Backup Protection in Power Systems

Mohammad Rezaei Jegarluei et al.

Summary: This letter proposes a technique to reduce the computational complexity of wide-area backup protection (WABP) methods using sparse PMU measurements. The technique allows the system of equations for each candidate line to be obtained directly from the bus impedance matrix of the pre-fault power system, eliminating the need for multiple distinct bus impedance matrices. The proposed technique's applicability and effectiveness are verified through extensive simulations on the IEEE 39-bus test system.

A communication-free active unit protection scheme for inverter dominated islanded microgrids

Md Asif Uddin Khan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel active protection strategy for inverter dominated islanded microgrids, which coordinates protection actions with the inverter control strategy. The proposed scheme involves injecting specific harmonic components into the microgrid during a fault and using relays to detect and analyze these components to identify the faulted section and take appropriate isolating actions. The performance of the scheme is verified through simulations and real-time case studies.

Impact of Inverter-Based Resources on Negative Sequence Quantities-Based Protection Elements

Aboutaleb Haddadi et al.

Summary: This paper explores the key differences between WTGs and SGs in terms of negative-sequence fault current characteristics, demonstrating how these differences can lead to misoperation of protective elements. Simulation case studies illustrate the impact of wind generation on 50Q and 67Q elements, as well as the effect on communication-assisted protection and fault identification scheme. Experimental validation in a hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation set up further confirms the impact on directional elements.

A new adaptive coordination scheme of distance relays in DFIG - based wind farm collector lines and transmission line compensated by STATCOM

Jamshid Barati et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an adaptive characteristic to improve the performance of distance relays in transmission line and collector lines of DFIG-based wind farms under single-phase-to-ground resistive faults, by adding an adaptive coefficient to modify the zone settings of conventional relays. Through analytical relationships and numerical results, the efficiency of the proposed method is confirmed.

PMU-voltage drop based fault locator for transmission backup protection

Jose J. Chavez et al.

Summary: This study introduces a centralized remote backup protection method that successfully detects the faulted transmission line, fault type, and fault distance using the delta algorithm and least-squares technique, utilizing phasor measurement unit data in a non-iterative manner. Multiple simulation studies on the IEEE 39-bus system were conducted to validate the proposed method.
