Development of DIP-based algorithm for extraction of UV video attributes from corona discharges on polymeric insulators

K. B. Brito et al.

Summary: This study introduces the development of an algorithm based on digital image processing for extracting attributes related to the ultraviolet manifestation of corona discharge in polymeric insulators, and presents results for testing new and damaged insulators using the algorithm, with the attributes normalized and represented on radar charts. The algorithm serves as an innovative tool to standardize data obtained from UV videos, providing opportunities for further human analysis and application of classification tools.

Effect of TiO2 coating on the surface condition and corona characteristics of positive DC conductors with particle matters

Pei Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of electric field and photocatalysis on the corona characteristics of transmission lines by preparing a TiO2 photocatalytic coating on the surface of transmission wires using plasma spraying. Results show that light and applied electric field promote the photocatalytic effect of TiO2, helping to reduce corona discharge and ion current density during corona discharge on power transmission lines.

Probabilistic load flow calculation of AC/DC hybrid system based on cumulant method

Yinfeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a probabilistic load flow method based on the cumulant method to handle the complex and changeable operating conditions of the power system. By setting control modes and calculating the traditional AC/DC flow, relevant samples are obtained and the probability density function of node voltage and line power is derived using the series expansion method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through experiments on actual transmission systems.

Outdoor Investigation of the Corona Characteristics and Audible Noise of a Hybrid AC/DC Overhead Line

S. Hedtke et al.

Summary: Electric utilities are seeking new approaches to increase the transmission capacity of existing lines. The conversion to hybrid AC/DC lines offers more power but also introduces coupling effects between the AC and DC systems, which need to be carefully controlled for public acceptance. Conducting studies on corona effects under different conditions is crucial for understanding the impact on audible noise.

Classification and comparison of AC and DC partial discharges by pulse waveform analysis

Mojtaba Rostaghi-Chalaki et al.

Summary: This study classified and compared AC and DC partial discharge based on PD pulse waveform analysis. A testbed was designed to collect data from four different types of PD and classify the waveforms into representative groups associated to their discharge mechanisms. Differences between AC and DC PDs were identified through statistical data and clustered patterns of PD amplitude versus their temporal characteristics.

Universal branch model for the solution of optimal power flows in hybrid AC/DC grids

Abraham Alvarez-Bustos et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a universal model formulation for solving Optimal Power Flows for hybrid AC/DC grids, which provides a direct link between AC and DC parts of the grid and can realistically model any element within the grid. The model, which does not distinguish between AC and DC elements mathematically, has been shown to be on par with existing methodologies in accuracy and computational efficiency.

Effect of Relative Humidity on the Surface Electric Field Intensity Characteristics under DC Voltage in a Corona Cage

Hongbo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of relative humidity on the surface electric field (SEF) strength and space charge density, with the results showing a mutual inhibition between the two. After corona occurs, SEF decreases with voltage while charge density increases. A turning point for SEF was observed around 70% humidity.

The Role of Space Charge on Corona Inception Threshold Conditions in Rod-Plane Air Gaps at DC/AC Combined Voltages

Xuyuan He et al.

Summary: The study found that in high AC component, the corona inception voltage is higher for negative corona compared to positive corona, while in low AC component, the corona inception voltage is higher for positive corona. The corona inception voltage decreases with increasing AC component, and the remaining space charge tends to block corona inception, leading to a higher corona inception voltage.
