Mineralogy and elemental geochemistry of Permo-Carboniferous Li-enriched coal in the southern Ordos Basin, China: Implications for modes of occurrence, controlling factors and sources of Li in coal

Bo Jiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and origins of lithium in enriched coal and coal seams in the southern margin of the Ordos Basin using various analytical techniques. The results showed that lithium mainly accumulates in clay minerals in the coal seams, and the contribution of volcanic ash to coal was supported by the presence of high-temperature minerals. The enrichment of lithium in the coal-measure strata is controlled by multiple factors.

Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of tonsteins from the Middle Jurassic Yan'an Formation, Ordos Basin, North China

Zhihui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mineralogical and geochemical compositions of tonstein layers from the Middle Jurassic Yan'an Formation in the Ordos Basin of North China. The results suggest that the tonsteins were mainly derived from a significant pyroclastic source and have a felsic (rhyolitic) magma origin. The paper also analyzes the leaching behavior of trace elements from the tonsteins into the enclosing coals.

Records of chemical weathering and volcanism linked to paleoclimate transition during the Late Paleozoic Icehouse

Dawei Lv et al.

Summary: The demise of the late Paleozoic ice age is the only recorded transition from an icehouse to a greenhouse state, and a study on chemical weathering and volcanism in North China Craton reveals a warming event during the early Asselian period, with volcanic activity being closely related to carbon isotope perturbations and climate change.

Critical element (Nb-Ta-Zr-Hf-REE-Ga-Th-U) mineralization in Late Triassic coals from the Gaosheng Mine, Sichuan Basin, southwestern China: Coupled effects of products of sediment-source-region erosion and acidic water infiltration

Mingxuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanism of critical element mineralization in the coal of the Gaosheng Mine in southwestern China. The study reveals the presence of high concentrations of critical elements in the coal, which may originate from erosion and volcanic detritus. The findings have significant implications for understanding the genesis of coal and the exploitation of critical elements in coal.

Climate forcing of terrestrial carbon sink during the Middle Jurassic greenhouse climate: Chronostratigraphic analysis of the Yan′an Formation, Ordos Basin, North China

Zhihui Zhang et al.

Summary: Studying the relationship between coal deposits and orbital forcing of climate during the Jurassic period is crucial for understanding global carbon cycle and climate change. The Yan'an Formation in the Ordos Basin in China is one of the largest and most extensively studied Jurassic coal reservoirs in the world. Results show a strong correlation between the formation of coal in the Yan'an Formation and orbital eccentricity cycles, indicating climate control on lake level fluctuations and sediment input. This study highlights the importance of terrestrial organic carbon burial in the global carbon cycle during the Middle Jurassic.

Records of volcanism and organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg) linked to changes in atmospheric pCO2 and climate during the Pennsylvanian icehouse interval

Jing Lu et al.

Summary: The late Paleozoic ice age is the only recorded icehouse-to-greenhouse transition on Earth, with volcanic activity closely related to glacial-interglacial climate cycles. High atmospheric pCO(2) levels correlate with interglacial periods, while low pCO(2) and cooling correspond to glacial intervals.

High-precision U-Pb age constraints on the Permian floral turnovers, paleoclimate change, and tectonics of the North China block

Qiong Wu et al.

Summary: The Permian marine-terrestrial system of the North China block provides insights into the evolution of northern temperate ecosystems during the transition from icehouse to greenhouse. Through high-precision U-Pb geochronology, it was found that the dominance of continental red beds, aridification of climate, and disappearance of coals and tropical flora in the North China block occurred earlier than previously thought. A long hiatus in the early Kungurian to mid-Guadalupian was associated with tectonic convergence and led to the loss of diverse Cathaysian floras and invasion of monotonous Angaran floras under arid conditions. Volcanism during the Cisuralian may have played a role in global warming and aridification after the late Paleozoic ice age.

Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of altered volcanic ashes (tonsteins and K-bentonites) from the latest Permian coal-bearing strata of western Guizhou Province, southwestern China

Minglian Shen et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the mineralogical and geochemical compositions of volcanic ashes from the Late Permian coal-bearing strata in southwest China, revealing their distinct classification into tonsteins and K-bentonites based on the relative abundances of kaolinite and mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S). The volcanic ashes are associated with felsic volcanic eruptions and likely originated from at least two felsic sources, indicating a complex geological history in the region.
