Testing Passive Microwave-Based Hail Retrievals Using GPM DPR Ku-Band Radar

Sarah D. Bang et al.

Summary: Several studies have developed methods to diagnose hail storms using satellite imagery, with this paper using radar measurements to validate passive microwave approaches. By evaluating the constraints on radar reflectivity at different temperatures and geographical variations, a combination of different temperature measurements showed the highest accuracy globally. However, there were regional biases in some methods, particularly in subtropical and midlatitude regions.

Synoptic patterns of severe hailstorm events in Spain

F. de Pablo Davila et al.

Summary: The study of severe hailstorms over Spain from 2012 to 2019 found that events with large hail sizes were associated with high low-level moisture flux, static instability, and specific temperature value patterns at different pressure levels. The presence of high values of precipitable water and moderate to strong storm relative helicity and shear were also detected.
