Chitosan and graphene oxide-based biodegradable bags: An eco-friendly and effective packaging alternative to maintain postharvest quality of 'Palmer' mango

Joao Claudio Vilvert et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using chitosan-based biodegradable bags during cold storage can delay mango ripening, maintain fruit quality parameters, and reduce weight loss, respiration rate, and anthracnose incidence. This suggests that chitosan-based bags are an eco-friendly and effective method to preserve the postharvest quality of 'Palmer' mangoes during cold storage.

Synergistic effect of gum Arabic and carboxymethyl cellulose as biocomposite coating delays senescence in stored tomatoes by regulating antioxidants and cell wall degradation

Shaghef Ejaz et al.

Summary: This study tested a novel combination of hydrocolloid gum arabic (GA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a coating to extend the postharvest life of tomatoes. The results showed that the biocomposite hydrocolloid coating reduced weight loss, decay percentage, and stress markers in tomato fruits. It also preserved bioactive compounds, color, and enzymatic ROS scavenging mechanism, and delayed senescence by maintaining cell wall fractions.

The effect of layer-by-layer edible coating on the shelf life and transcriptome of 'Kosui' Japanese pear fruit

Natsuki Hira et al.

Summary: Edible coatings, such as chitosan/alginate-based layer-by-layer (LBL) coatings, have been shown to effectively prolong the shelf life of fruits by reducing respiration and ethylene production rates, inhibiting firmness loss, and maintaining peel color. Through RNA-Seq analysis, it was found that LBL coatings downregulated genes related to ethylene production and fruit ripening, while upregulating genes associated with the glycolysis pathway. This suggests that the extended shelf life achieved by LBL coatings may be due to the control of aerobic-anaerobic metabolism balance.

Carboxymethyl cellulose coating regulates cell wall polysaccharides disassembly and delays ripening of harvested banana fruit

Sajid Ali et al.

Summary: A dip in 1.5% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) can significantly delay decay and soften of bananas. It can suppress the occurrence of decay and physiological weight loss, delaying the color changes of banana peel. The dip treatment can also delay the ethylene and respiration peaks of bananas, maintaining firmness and pectin content of the fruit.
