Different Binding Affinities of Three General Odorant-Binding Proteins in Grapholita funebrana (Treitscheke) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) to Sex Pheromones, Host Plant Volatiles, and Insecticides

Lin-Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the expression profiles and binding properties of GOBP genes in G. funebrana, revealing their roles in the recognition of host odorants and sex pheromones, as well as their binding to certain insecticides. These findings contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanism of G. funebrana olfaction and the development of effective control methods.

Binding Affinity Characterization of Four Antennae-Enriched Odorant-Binding Proteins From Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Cheng Qu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the olfactory binding characteristics and expression patterns of H. axyridis antenna specific OBP genes. The findings suggest that HaxyOBP15, with its higher expression in adult stage and broader ligand-binding spectrum, may play a greater role in binding volatiles compared to other HaxyOBPs.

A candidate aldehyde oxidase in the antennae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is potentially involved in the degradation of pheromones, plant-derived volatiles and the detoxification of xenobiotics

Mei-Mei Wang et al.

Summary: Insect antennae are crucial for sensing semiochemicals and odors, with genes associated with antennae potentially playing roles in olfactory-related signal transduction. Enzymatic inactivation, including the action of odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs), may contribute to signal termination. A novel cDNA encoding the putative odorant-degrading enzyme PxylAOX3 was identified and characterized in the antennae of the diamondback moth, showing potential involvement in degrading structurally diverse aldehyde odorants and protecting olfactory neurons. This enzyme could be a target for pesticide development.

Functional Disparity of Three Pheromone-Binding Proteins to Different Sex Pheromone Components in Hyphantria cunea (Drury)

Xiao-Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: Hyphantria cunea is an invasive pest species in China that uses type II sex pheromone components. In this study, the binding mechanisms of its sex pheromone components to their respective pheromone-binding proteins were explored. The results showed that HcunPBPs have different selectivities for pheromone components with major and minor structural differences, providing insight into the olfactory mechanism of moths using type II pheromone components.

Structural and Functional Characterization of European Corn Borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, Pheromone Binding Protein 3

Omar Al-Danoon et al.

Summary: The lepidopteran moth Ostrinia nubilalis plays a significant role in impacting crop production in the US and Europe. The Pheromone binding proteins (PBPs) in male moth antennae are crucial in detecting and delivering pheromones for mating. The study on Ostrinia nubilalis PBP3 (OnubPBP3) revealed nanomolar affinity to pheromones, pH-induced unfolding behavior, and ligand-induced conformational changes, suggesting stability differences when bound to E- versus Z-isomers of the pheromone.

Functional properties of insect olfactory receptors: ionotropic receptors and odorant receptors

Dieter Wicher et al.

Summary: The majority of insect olfactory receptors belong to two distinct protein families - ionotropic receptors (IRs) related to the ionotropic glutamate receptor family, and odorant receptors (ORs) evolved from the gustatory receptor family. Both types assemble into heteromeric ligand-gated cation channels, addressing environmental and ecological challenges insects face.
