Anionic amphiphilic calixarenes for peptide assembly and delivery

Roman V. Rodik et al.

Summary: This study reports on the self-assembly behavior of anionic amphiphilic calixarenes in aqueous media. The calixarenes with phosphonate groups and alkyl chains can form micelles of about 10 nm diameter and complex cationic peptides into nanoparticles. Cellular studies show that these anionic amphiphilic calixarenes have low cytotoxicity and enable the internalization of fluorescently labeled peptides into live cells.

Concomitant binding of two fluorescent probes at site-I of human serum albumin: The protein acting as a scaffold enabling fluorescence resonance energy transfer

Valdecir Farias Ximenes

Summary: This study demonstrates that two ligands can be accommodated simultaneously in the binding site-I of human serum albumin (HSA). Experimental results using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) show that the presence of the protein alters the interaction between ligands and the protein microenvironment. These findings have important implications for understanding the drug transport mechanism of HSA.

Deprotonation-induced enhancement in fluorescence of 2-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)phenol, a Schiff base

Arkaprava Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The excited state dynamics of neutral and anionic forms of a Schiff base compound were studied using time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The anionic form exhibited stronger fluorescence with longer lifetime compared to the neutral form. Fluorescence enhancement induced by deprotonation was found to be a general phenomenon for this class of molecules as observed in comparison with other Schiff bases in recent publications.

Universal quenching of common fluorescent probes by water and alcohols

Jimmy Maillard et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that water acts as a classic fluorescence quencher for organic fluorophores, reducing their fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime significantly. The fluorescence quenching is found to be more efficient for red-emitting probes and is attributed to high-energy vibrations of the solvent. Understanding this solvent-assisted quenching mechanism could lead to the rational design of brighter fluorescent probes by protecting organic fluorophores from the solvent.
