Assessment of Wooden Beams from Historical Buildings Using Ultrasonic Transmission Tomography

Summary: The main goal of this study was to evaluate wooden elements non-destructively using ultrasonic waves. The study focused on the influence of wood anisotropy on the propagation of ultrasonic waves and proposed a novel method to determine the position of the cross-section pith. The study presented that the proposed imaging approach was capable of assessing the technical condition of historic wooden beams by determining the degree of wood damage and the location of discontinuities, scratches, or fibrosis in the tested cross-section.
