Microstructure and mechanical properties of multi-pass forged and annealed 42CrMo steel

Wanhui Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of multi-pass forging and annealing treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 42CrMo steel were investigated in this work. The results show that multi-pass forging can refine the grain size and increase dislocation density, leading to higher yield stress. Annealing at different temperatures after forging can reduce the yield stress and improve elongation, with corresponding brittle-ductile transition in fracture features.

On the relationship between microstructure and residual stress in laser-shock-peened Ti-6Al-4V

Sergey Mironov et al.

Summary: The relationship between residual stress and microstructure evolution during laser shock peening of Ti-6Al-4V was investigated. It was found that the unique residual stress state generated during this process is attributed to the very high imposed energy and the extremely short time scale, which inhibits dislocation cross-slip and climb, thus affecting deformation and microstructure evolution.

Understanding the nanostructure evolution and the mechanical strengthening of the M50 bearing steel during ultrasonic shot peening

Xiong Yue et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic shot peening (USP) technology was used to surface nanocrystallize high-strength M50 bearing steel at room temperature. The thickness of the lath martensite in M50 steel was found to be refined to 10 nm. The nanohardness of the nanostructured M50 was significantly higher (38%) than that of the as-received matrix materials. Microstructure evolution and grain refinement mechanisms were investigated, revealing the transformation of low angle grain boundaries to high angle grain boundaries and the formation of ultrafine equiaxed grains. The decomposition of carbides during grain refinement was also observed.

Venkataramana Bonu et al.

Summary: Developing metal dopant-free single phase thick diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings for automobile applications is challenging due to internal stress issues. In this study, a simple process was used to deposit thick Cr/CrN/DLC coating on plasma nitrided steel, resulting in good adhesion and low friction coefficient. The coating also exhibited significantly better erosion resistance compared to the nitrided steel substrate at various temperatures. Additionally, multi-wavelength Raman spectroscopy was utilized to study the structural properties and thermal stability of the coating.

Contribution of ultrasonic surface rolling process to the fatigue properties of TB8 alloy with body-centered cubic structure

Dan Liu et al.

Summary: The ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) was found to significantly enhance the fatigue strength of TB8 alloys by creating gradient structure surface layers through multiple passes. However, the improvement in fatigue strength compared to other titanium alloys was limited due to notable surface residual stresses relaxation. Fatigue crack initiation was observed in larger grains on the surface, with subsequent propagation in a mixed transgranular and intergranular mode. Grain growth and reduction in geometrically necessary dislocations value were identified in post-fatigued USRP-treated TB8 samples.
