Phase-field modeling of rock fractures with roughness

Fan Fei et al.

Summary: Phase-field modeling is a continuous approach used for simulating rock fractures, which can handle complex, discontinuous geometry without explicit surface tracking algorithms. However, current phase-field models do not consider the impact of surface roughness on the mechanical response of fractures, despite its importance for subsurface systems. To address this, we introduce the first framework for phase-field modeling of rough rock fractures, which can simulate complex crack growth from rough discontinuities.

A barrier method for frictional contact on embedded interfaces

Yidong Zhao et al.

Summary: We propose a barrier method for treating frictional contact on interfaces embedded in finite elements. The method has attractive features such as not introducing additional degrees of freedom or iterative steps, avoiding inter-penetration, avoiding an ill-conditioned matrix system, and direct control of solution accuracy. The method involves deriving contact pressure from a smooth barrier energy function and using a smoothed friction law. We use the extended finite element method for discretization and devise an integration scheme to provide stable solutions. The method can be tailored to embedded interfaces without parameter tuning and is highly robust and cost-effective for challenging frictional contact problems.

Double-phase-field formulation for mixed-mode fracture in rocks

Fan Fei et al.

Summary: The proposed double-phase-field formulation combines two different phase fields to describe cohesive tensile fracture and frictional shear fracture in rocks. It allows for direct use of material strengths measured from experiments and can naturally distinguish between different fracture modes. The validation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in simulating mixed-mode fractures in rocks.

A locally conservative mixed finite element framework for coupled hydro-mechanical-chemical processes in heterogeneous porous media

T. Kadeethum et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mixed finite element framework for coupled hydro-mechanical-chemical processes in heterogeneous porous media, combining enriched Galerkin method and three-field mixed finite element method for local mass conservation. It provides a robust and efficient computational method for simulation of reactive flow and transport in deformable porous media, even with strongly heterogeneous and anisotropic material properties.
