A reconnaissance study of potentially important scandium deposits associated with carbonatite and alkaline igneous complexes of the Permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province, SW China

Mei-Fu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reports a potentially important type of Sc deposit associated with carbonatite and alkaline igneous complexes in the Permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province (ELIP) in SW China. These deposits contain high concentrations of Sc, which may justify mining under current prices. In addition, the carbonatites in these complexes are potentially important targets for REE exploration.

Scandium: Ore deposits, the pivotal role of magmatic enrichment and future exploration

Zhenchao Wang et al.

Summary: Scandium, known as the 'miracle metal', is a critical resource in the world due to its unique properties in material sciences and wide applications in advanced technology. It is not extraordinarily sparse in the Earth's crust, but is often dispersed and does not form ore deposits. The majority of global Sc resources come from magmatic deposits, with hydrothermal and supergene deposits also contributing to Sc enrichment.
