Cobalt complexes of an OSNSO-tetrapodal pentadentate ligand: Synthesis, structures and reactivity

Lucas Thevenin et al.

Summary: The study presents the synthesis and characterization of a novel pentadentate tetrapodal proligand, 2,6-bis[(2-hydroxyphenyl)sulfanylmethyl]pyridine, and its cobalt(II) complex. Despite being designed for organometallic mediated radical polymerization, the complex exhibited poor solubility in non-coordinating solvents and various vinyl monomers.

Organo-Cobalt Complexes in Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerization

Wachara Benchaphanthawee et al.

Summary: Cobalt mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) plays a crucial role in controlling the polymerization of less active monomers, such as vinyl acetate, with the control mechanisms being correlated to the redox potential of cobalt complexes. The hybridization of CMRP and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) allows for the direct synthesis of block copolymers in one pot. CMRP also enables the control of isotacticities and crystalline properties in polymers.

Bio-Inspired Molecular Catalysts for Water Oxidation

Dan Xiao et al.

Summary: The catalytic tetranuclear manganese-calcium-oxo cluster in photosynthetic reaction center, photosystem II, provides an excellent blueprint for light-driven water oxidation. Water oxidation reaction has attracted intense interest due to its potential as a renewable, clean energy source. Numerous synthetic bio-inspired molecular catalysts incorporating cheap and abundant metals such as Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu, as well as Ru and Ir, are being developed.
