Damping and Electromechanical Behavior of Ionic-Modified Brominated Poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene) Rubber Containing Petroleum Resin C5

Xiao Hu et al.

Summary: To improve the damping properties of rubbers, organic tackifiers and ionic networks were investigated. The study found that by optimizing the ionic network and resin concentration, the elastomers exhibited mechanical reinforcement and a broad effective damping temperature range. These materials could be used for vibration and energy harvesting applications.

Shape-Memory Semicrystalline Polymeric Materials Based on Various Rubbers

Ozge Akca et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple strategy for fabricating shape-memory materials using commercial rubbers. The rubbers are dissolved in a monomer called n-octadecyl acrylate (C18A) and then polymerized using UV light to form interconnected interpenetrating polymer networks (c-IPNs) with crystalline domains. The resulting materials exhibit tunable melting and crystallization temperatures, as well as adjustable mechanical properties. The coexistence of chemical cross-links and crystalline domains allows the c-IPNs to efficiently demonstrate shape-memory functionality.

Butyl rubber-based interpenetrating polymer networks with side chain crystallinity: Self-healing and shape-memory polymers with tunable thermal and mechanical properties

Esra Su et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-healing and shape-memory interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was synthesized by UV polymerization. It was found that the physical properties of IPNs, including melting temperature, crystallinity, Young's modulus, toughness, and stretchability, could be tuned by varying the amount of isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR). The crystalline structure acted as sacrificial bonds to dissipate energy under strain, leading to improved toughness. Furthermore, the IPNs exhibited temperature induced healing behavior and effective shape-memory function.

So Rim Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a silane coupling agent MPTMS was utilized to enhance the adhesion strength between an aluminum-based vibrational damping plate and a butyl rubber damper. The results showed a significant improvement in peel strength and a 7-fold enhancement in damping loss factor compared to untreated damping.

Solvent-Free UV Polymerization of n-Octadecyl Acrylate in Butyl Rubber: A Simple Way to Produce Tough and Smart Polymeric Materials at Ambient Temperature

Summary: This study reports a simple and versatile strategy for the preparation of a highly tough and highly stretchable interconnected interpenetrating polymer network based on butyl rubber and poly(n-octadecyl acrylate) with thermally induced healing and shape-memory functions. The resulting c-IPNs exhibit excellent stiffness, stretchability, and toughness that can be tuned by changing the ratio of components. Incorporating a second, noncrystallizable monomer in the melt mixture can further tune the properties of the c-IPNs.
