The Role of Mixed Convection and Hydrodynamic Dispersion During CO2 Dissolution in Saline Aquifers: A Numerical Study

Avihai Tsinober et al.

Summary: Dissolution trapping is important in CO2 geological storage, and background flow can suppress the development of convective fingers in CO2 dissolution. The dissolution process can be categorized into three regimes based on the Pe/Ra ratio: natural convection dominant, pure forced convection dominant, and both natural and forced convection important.

Evaluating the Effects of Multiscale Heterogeneous Sediments on Solute Mixing and Effective Dispersion

Wanli Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dispersion and mixing behavior of solute in a heterogeneous aquifer using high-resolution and three-dimensional numerical simulations. The results show that meter-scale heterogeneity plays a significant role in solute transport processes, and effective dispersion is more sensitive to the spatial organization of sedimentary facies types.

Unstable Density-Driven Convection of CO2 in Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Porous Media With Implications for Deep Saline Aquifers

Sijia Wang et al.

Summary: Density-driven convection mixing enhances CO2 trapping in deep saline aquifers storage. Fingering instability and mass transfer caused by convection mixing were investigated using MRI in porous media with varying permeability. The dissolution rate characterized by Sherwood number was found to be independent of local convection dissolution in heterogeneous porous media, promoting CO2 dissolution in carbon storage.

Quantitative study of density-driven convection mass transfer in porous media by MRI

Sijia Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dissolution and convection of CO2 injected into brines in porous media using MRI technology. The results showed that convective mixing significantly enhances mass transfer compared to pure diffusion, and improving injection methods can further enhance dissolution rates. The findings provide valuable insights for engineering applications in CO2 capture and storage sites.

Spreading and mixing during solutal convection in uniform porous media with application to geologic CO2 storage

A-M Eckel et al.

Summary: The study numerically investigates convective dissolution in saline aquifers and reveals an acceleration of the mixing process over time, transitioning from diffusive to superdiffusive mixing patterns regardless of Ra. The onset time of convection and the linear reduction of time needed to reach close-to-complete mixing with Ra are significant findings. The non-dimensional mass flux, expressed in terms of the Sherwood number, exhibits a natural logarithmic scaling for Ra <= 2 500.
