A review of microwave-assisted process intensified multiphase reactors

Himanshu Goyal et al.

Summary: Microwaves offer an alternative heating method and process intensification in multiphase reactors. However, the mechanism of how microwaves affect chemical processes is still debated, highlighting the need for further research in experimental and modeling studies to bridge this gap. Promising results have been shown by recent modeling studies, indicating the potential for comprehensive understanding and optimization of microwave multiphase reactors through a combination of experimental and modeling tools.

Microwave Heating-Induced Temperature Gradients in Liquid-Liquid Biphasic Systems

Tai-Ying Chen et al.

Summary: Microwaves can promote the electrification and intensification of chemical manufacturing. This study focuses on the MW-heated liquid-liquid biphasic systems related to extraction and measures the temperature difference between two phases. The results show permanent temperature differences and periodic oscillations, which are driven by the absorption rate of MW irradiation and the heat transfer between phases. A multiphysics model is also developed to predict the temperature difference in a batch system, and a simple analytical model provides design principles. These findings offer new insights into the design and optimization of MW-heated biphasic systems.

A novel microwave-assisted methanol-to-hydrocarbons process with a structured ZSM-5/SiC foam catalyst: Proof-of-concept and environmental impacts

Xiaoxia Ou et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel combination of microwave irradiation and structured zeolite/SiC foam catalyst for improving the methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) process and its environmental sustainability. The experimental results showed that the microwave-assisted MTH process with the structured catalyst promoted higher selectivity towards C1-C5 hydrocarbons, especially propylene, compared to conventional ZSM-5 pellets. Moreover, the microwave-based process with the structured catalyst reduced the environmental impacts of propylene production significantly.

Imaging of liquid temperature distribution during microwave heating via thermochromic metal organic frameworks

Xi Shen et al.

Summary: Microwave heating is widely used in chemical engineering as an efficient and clean energy supply method. However, the problem of uneven heating hinders the industrialization of microwave. In this study, a non-contact nano-thermometer was used to achieve in situ imaging of liquid temperature distribution during microwave heating. By employing a transparent microwave material, ZMOF, as the temperature indicator, the temperature distribution of the liquid was visualized. The research results can provide experimental validation for numerical simulation and guide the optimization of microwave heating equipment.

Novel One-Step Process for the Production of Levulinic Acid from Furfural over Hierarchical Zeolites in a Microwave Reactor

Bharath Velaga et al.

Summary: A novel one-step process for producing levulinic acid from furfural over hierarchical zeolites in a microwave reactor is reported. The conversion and product distribution are influenced by formalin concentration, catalyst properties, and heating mode. A critical formalin concentration of 20 wt% is identified, with higher conversion and yield over H-zeolite compared to Na-zeolite.

Microwave heating of slurries

Himanshu Goyal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of selective microwave heating on multiphase reactors, focusing on slurry reactors with solid particles dispersed in liquid. Through experiments, theory, and simulations, they propose an ideal reactor and analytical expressions to predict temperature evolution. The results show a strong influence of solid material and concentration on the heating rate of slurries.

Temperature Homogeneity under Selective and Localized Microwave Heating in Structured Flow Reactors

Abhinav Malhotra et al.

Summary: Research into selectively heating different phases of multiphase systems using microwaves reveals a lack of understanding of materials properties and operating conditions that maximize temperature gradients. Computational fluid dynamics calculations and temperature measurements in structured flow reactors were used to assess temperature differences and develop a model for estimating temperature gradients. Localized heating in structured beds is found to enhance selectivity under certain conditions.
