Toxicological transcriptome of human airway constructs after exposure to indoor air particulate matter: In search of relevant pathways of moisture damage-associated health effects

Maria-Elisa Nordberg et al.

Summary: This study focused on characterizing gene expression in human airway epithelium after exposure to indoor air particulate matter from houses with and without moisture damage. The results showed that exposure to particulate matter from moisture-damaged houses activated toxicology-related genes in airway constructs, with differential expression not consistent among all matched pairs. Key potential targets in moisture damage-associated cellular responses were highlighted, including CYP1A1 and NFKB1.

Systematic review on primary and secondary genotoxicity of carbon black nanoparticles in mammalian cells and animals

Emilio Di Ianni et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the contribution of primary and secondary genotoxicity caused by carbon black exposure. It suggests that carbon black has a weak genotoxic effect, mainly through a primary genotoxic mechanism mediated by oxidative stress, rather than inflammation-driven secondary genotoxicity.

Assessment of primary and inflammation-driven genotoxicity of carbon black nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo

Summary: Carbon black nanoparticles with large surface area/volume ratio may cause oxidative stress and inflammation, and the study found that surface area is correlated with inflammation while mass is correlated with genotoxicity.

The oxidative capacity of indoor source combustion derived particulate matter and resulting respiratory toxicity

Xinyi Niu et al.

Summary: This study characterized the emission factors of tobacco and incense in Hong Kong and found that different indoor sources of PM2.5 triggered oxidative damage and inflammatory responses in A549 cells. Indoor sources of PM2.5, such as environmental tobacco smoke and incense smoke, pose significant risks to respiratory health.
