Pertactin Deficient Bordetella pertussis, Vaccine-Driven Evolution and Reemergence of Pertussis

Longhuan Ma et al.

Summary: The recent resurgence of pertussis in vaccinated populations and the rapid expansion of strains lacking pertactin have raised concerns about vaccine-driven evolution. The selective pressure on pertactin is evidenced by disruptive mutations in circulating strains, while other vaccine antigens are not affected as rapidly. The unique properties of pertactin may explain why it is being eliminated more quickly than other antigens.
