Modeling and Comparison of Passive Component Volume of Hybrid Resonant Switched-Capacitor Converters

Zichao Ye et al.

Summary: Hybrid and resonant switched-capacitor (SC) converters offer the potential for higher efficiency and power density compared to conventional SC and magnetic-based converters. Research shows that resonant SC (ReSC) converters use significantly less passive component volume than traditional SC and buck converters. Additionally, a standardized passive volume parameter has been proposed for fair comparison of different ReSC topologies.

On the Role of Switch Output Capacitance on Passive Balancing within the Flying Capacitor Multilevel Converter

Roderick S. Bayliss et al.

Summary: The Flying Capacitor Multi-Level (FCML) converter allows the use of low-voltage switches in a high-voltage converter by evenly distributing the voltage stress on a series of switches using flying capacitors. Previous research identified certain combinations where the capacitor voltages do not naturally balance, but this is not observed in practice. Analyzing the impact of switch output capacitance reveals that it has a natural balancing effect.

An Integration Method of Resonant Switched-Capacitor Converters Based on Parasitic Inductance

Longyang Yu et al.

Summary: This letter proposes a novel method to increase the value of parasitic inductors by utilizing direct coupling, lateral structure, and vertical structure to increase equivalent inductance. It achieves zero current switching, high efficiency, high power density, and low profile design. The integrated parasitic inductor method results in higher power density and peak efficiency compared to discrete inductors.

Analysis and Comparison of Hybrid-Resonant Switched-Capacitor DC-DC Converters With Passive Component Size Constraints

Prescott H. McLaughlin et al.

Summary: This article explores the merits of a variety of hybrid resonant switched-capacitor (SC) dc-dc converters under strict size constraints on passive components, comparing topologies using a minimum power loss figure of merit. The impact of area or volume constraints on inductors and capacitors is demonstrated. Common topologies are compared using the generalized FOM under different scaling scenarios and validated using an experimental prototype.

Nathan M. Ellis et al.

Summary: This work introduces a modified split-phase switching scheme for a dual inductor hybrid-Dickson converter, which increases the allowable fly capacitor voltage ripple and passive component utilization. Analysis and hardware prototype show a peak efficiency of 93.8% (87.5%) at 750 kHz switching frequency for 48V-to-3V(1V) conversion, with effective capacitor utilization and complete soft-charging.

A High-Efficiency Charge-Pump Gate Drive Power Delivery Technique for Flying Capacitor Multi-Level Converters with Wide Operating Range

Rahul K. Iyer et al.

Summary: A robust gale drive power delivery approach for converter topologies, specifically the FCML converter, is proposed in this work. The power delivery network leverages internal voltages and a charge-pump mechanism to provide gate drive power with high efficiency, reducing losses by an estimated 38% compared to competing techniques. Furthermore, validation in a hardware prototype demonstrates the technique's effectiveness and robustness.

Modeling and Analysis of Resonant Switched-Capacitor Converters with Finite Terminal Capacitances

Yicheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that finite terminal capacitances have significant effects on the output impedance and efficiency of ReSC converters in practical applications. A general modeling and analysis methodology is proposed to characterize the impact of finite terminal capacitances on the output impedance of ReSC converters. Insufficiency in terminal capacitances can result in a higher critical switching frequency.

A Resonant Dual Extended LC-tank Dickson Converter with 50% Two-Phase Operation at Odd Conversion Ratios

Nathan Miles Ellis et al.

Summary: The paper presents a resonant Dickson-based topology for complete soft-charging with two-phase operation and a convenient 50% duty cycle at all odd conversion ratios. By setting all capacitors and inductors equal, the solution achieves a constant blocking voltage largely independent of load and fly capacitor voltage ripple, allowing for large voltage ripple and effective utilization of fly capacitor's energy density. A high power density of 311 kW/liter (5,096 W/inch(3)) was achieved despite using diodes and 66% of the converter's volume being PCB and free space.
