Velocity vector reconstruction for real-time phase-contrast MRI with radial Maxwell correction

Jost M. Kollmeier et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an auto-calibrated image reconstruction for highly accelerated multi-directional phase-contrast MRI, compensating for phase differences and phase errors caused by concomitant magnetic fields, achieving real-time three-directional velocity vector reconstructions with high spatial and temporal resolution.

The difficulty of computing stable and accurate neural networks: On the barriers of deep learning and Smale's 18th problem

Matthew J. Colbrook et al.

Summary: Despite the existence of stable neural networks, current deep learning methods often suffer from instability. This study demonstrates the existence of well-conditioned problems in scientific computing where neural networks with good approximation qualities can be proven to exist, but there is currently no algorithm that can train or compute such networks.

Joint reconstruction and segmentation of noisy velocity images as an inverse Navier-Stokes problem

Alexandros Kontogiannis et al.

Summary: In this paper, we propose a method to solve the problem of joint velocity field reconstruction and boundary segmentation of noisy flow velocity images. The method is tested on synthetic images and experimental images, and its effectiveness and accuracy are demonstrated. The method also provides additional knowledge about the physics of the flow and addresses the shortcomings of other measurement methods.

On Learned Operator Correction in Inverse Problems

Sebastian Lunz et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the potential of learning a data-driven explicit model correction for inverse problems within a variational framework. It presents a solution of forward-adjoint correction that explicitly corrects in both data and solution spaces, and derives conditions under which solutions to the variational problem with a learned correction converge to solutions obtained with the correct operator. The proposed approach is evaluated on limited view photoacoustic tomography and compared to the established Bayesian approximation error method, showing potential applications in this field.

Enhancement of cerebrovascular 4D flow MRI velocity fields using machine learning and computational fluid dynamics simulation data

David R. Rutkowski et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential utility of using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data to train neural networks for enhancing the quality of blood flow images in PC MRI. By integrating CFD-informed neural networks, the trained network successfully de-noised flow images, decreased velocity error, and enhanced near-vessel-wall velocity quantification and visualization. This image enhancement method has the potential to improve qualitative and quantitative analysis of cerebrovascular PC MRI in experimental and clinical settings.

Results of the 2020 fastMRI Challenge for Machine Learning MR Image Reconstruction

Matthew J. Muckley et al.

Summary: This article discusses the organization of the second fastMRI competition, which focuses on reconstructing MRI images with subsampled k-space data, targeting the principal problem of accelerating MRI scans. Results showed one team performing best in both SSIM scores and qualitative radiologist evaluations. In contrast to the 2019 challenge, evaluations in this competition also emphasized pathological assessment in brain images.
