Improved Noise Performance of CMOS Poly Gate Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: The noise performance of three types of n(+)/p-well single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) fabricated in a standard 180 nm CMOS technology was studied. It was found that the SPADs with dummy floating poly gate (SPAD_DG) had better noise performance compared to the ones without poly gate (SPAD_NG). Connecting the poly gate to the n(+) cathode (SPAD_FG) further improved the noise performance.

High-Speed Free-Space QKD in the Presence of SPAD Dead Time

Shuangfeng Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the performance of a sifting scheme for high-speed operation at sub-deadtime regime in a free-space optical quantum key distribution (QKD) system. The expressions of sifting probability and sifted bit rate considering both dead time and background noise effects are derived. Through comprehensive performance analysis in terms of quantum bit error rate (QBER) and secrecy key rate (SKR), it is shown that operation at sub-deadtime regime can significantly improve the achievable SKR for free-space optical systems with certain path loss and background noise levels.
