Deep Reinforcement Learning Powered IRS-Assisted Downlink NOMA

Muhammad Shehab et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, utilizing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques to predict and adjust the phase shift matrices of the IRS for maximizing the total user rate. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IRS-assisted NOMA system achieves higher total rate compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system, with an increased capability of serving more users as the transmit power increases. However, imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) negatively impacts the data rate of users performing SIC, resulting in more than a 10% decrease in rate with a tenfold increase in imperfection.

Power Efficient IRS-Assisted NOMA

Jianyue Zhu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a MISO NOMA system assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface, where beamforming vectors and IRS phase shift matrix are optimized to minimize transmission power. An improved quasi-degradation condition using IRS is introduced to ensure NOMA achieves capacity region with high probability. Comparison between NOMA and ZFBF shows NOMA outperforms ZFBF with the same IRS phase shift matrix and improved quasi-degradation condition, motivating the proposed hybrid NOMA transmission. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed IRS-assisted MISO system outperforms the MISO case without IRS, and the hybrid NOMA transmission scheme always achieves better performance than orthogonal multiple access.
