Topographic and orbital forcing of Titan's hydroclimate

Juan M. Lora et al.

Summary: The cause of the hemispheric asymmetry of Titan's methane lakes and seas is still under debate, with seasonal insolation asymmetries and topographic variations both proposed as contributing factors. However, simulations suggest that topography has a minor effect on the global distribution of methane liquid, while orbital forcing and surface hydrology are more likely to dictate the distribution.

Winter Weakening of Titan's Stratospheric Polar Vortices

J. Shultis et al.

Summary: This study uses the TitanWRF model to simulate the full annual cycle of polar vortices on Titan. The simulation reveals a winter weakening of the vortices and a minimum in polar potential vorticity and midlatitude zonal winds between winter solstice and spring equinox. The seasonal evolution of the vortices is very similar in the two hemispheres, suggesting that any differences between observations of the northern and southern hemisphere vortices are likely due to different observation times.

Tracking Short-term Variations in the Haze Distribution of Titan's Atmosphere with SINFONI VLT

Fiona Nichols-Fleming et al.

Summary: Recent observations of Titan using near-infrared instruments have shown significant subseasonal variations in its atmosphere, with haze opacity decreasing in some regions and increasing in others over short time periods. These rapid changes suggest dynamic processes at play in the distribution of hazes in Titan's atmosphere, in addition to the known seasonal variations.

Haze Seasonal Variations of Titan's Upper Atmosphere during the Cassini Mission

Benoit Seignovert et al.

Summary: This study presents a 13-year survey of haze UV extinction profiles in Titan's upper atmosphere, observing the evolution of the detached haze layer (DHL) at different latitudes. The DHL globally sunk and disappeared in 2012, re-emerging from the Northern hemisphere in late 2015. Variability of the DHL was observed in 2005, with slightly higher extinction on the dawn side and some local inhomogeneities during a 2009 polar flyby.
