Lipoprotein (a) and Hypertension

Natalie C. Ward et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the associations between elevated blood pressure and lipoprotein (a), highlighting lipoprotein (a) as an independent causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and calcific aortic valve disease. Limited data demonstrate an association between elevated lipoprotein (a) and hypertension, but evidence suggests that measuring lipoprotein (a) levels may be useful in risk stratification, especially in hypertensive patients.

Lipoprotein (a), hypertension, and cardiovascular outcomes: a prospective study of patients with stable coronary artery disease

Summary: Elevated Lp(a) levels in stable CAD patients are significantly associated with cardiovascular events in those with hypertension, but not in normotensive individuals. The combination of high Lp(a) concentrations and hypertension greatly worsens the clinical prognosis in patients with CAD, indicating a prognostic correlation between Lp(a) and hypertension.
