Longitudinal Structural MRI Data Prediction in Nondemented and Demented Older Adults via Generative Adversarial Convolutional Network

Liyao Song et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common cause of dementia, posing a significant threat to the health of many people. In this paper, a generative adversarial convolutional network is proposed to predict missing structural MRI data, improving the accuracy of longitudinal prediction in AD patients.

Degenerative adversarial neuroimage nets for brain scan simulations: Application in ageing and dementia

Daniele Ravi et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel deep learning framework, 4D-DANI-Net, for generating high-resolution medical images to simulate neurodegeneration in elderly and dementia patients. Through extensive training and testing, it was found that 4D-DANI-Net produces personalized time series images that are more realistic and have lower artifacts compared to benchmark models.

SynthMorph: Learning Contrast-Invariant Registration Without Acquired Images

Malte Hoffmann et al.

Summary: This article introduces a strategy for learning image registration without actual imaging data, which can produce powerful networks that are not affected by the contrast introduced by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By training networks using diverse synthetic label maps and images and exposing them to a wide range of variability, the dependency on training data is eliminated, resulting in networks that accurately generalize to various MRI contrasts.

Quality assessment of anatomical MRI images from generative adversarial networks: Human assessment and image quality metrics

Matthias S. Treder et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using image quality metrics to assess the visual quality of GAN-generated images. The results show that experts are sensitive to changes in image quality, image quality metrics are sensitive to lower-quality images, and a deep quality assessment model trained on human ratings can capture subtle differences between higher-quality images.

TransMorph: Transformer for unsupervised medical image registration

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: Convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) have been a major focus in medical image analysis, but their performance is limited by a lack of consideration for long-range spatial relationships in images. Vision Transformer architectures have recently been proposed to address this issue and have shown state-of-the-art performances in medical imaging applications. In this paper, the researchers propose a hybrid Transformer-ConvNet model called TransMorph for volumetric medical image registration. The proposed model improves the performance significantly compared to existing registration methods and Transformer architectures, demonstrating the effectiveness of Transformers for medical image registration.

Local Brain-Age: A U-Net Model

Sebastian G. Popescu et al.

Summary: A new framework using deep learning to estimate neuroimaging-derived brain-age at a local level within the brain was proposed in this study. The local approach provides spatial information on anatomical patterns of brain ageing compared to global methods. By training a U-Net model, individualized 3D maps of brain-predicted age were generated and tested on a healthy population, showing more accurate performance in the prefrontal cortex and periventricular areas.
