Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of COVID-19 Patients with Overweight and Obesity: Turkish Nationwide Cohort Study (TurCObesity)

Ibrahim Sahin et al.

Summary: The study found that COVID-19 patients who were overweight or obese were more likely to have adverse outcomes, with obesity being a predictor of mortality. Urgent medical attention and active management should be given to such patients, especially the elderly, men, and those with chronic kidney disease.

Hypothyroidism does not lead to worse prognosis in COVID-19: findings from the Brazilian COVID-19 registry

Daniella Nunes Pereira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of thyroid diseases on the course and outcomes of COVID-19. The results showed that patients with hypothyroidism had a lower requirement for mechanical ventilation and a trend of lower in-hospital mortality. Therefore, there doesn't seem to be a significant association between hypothyroidism and worse prognosis in COVID-19.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with type 2 diabetes in Turkey: A nationwide study (TurCoviDia)

Alper Sonmez et al.

Summary: This study showed that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus hospitalized for COVID-19 are at increased risk of mortality, longer hospital stay, and ICU admission. Older age, male gender, obesity, insulin treatment, low lymphocyte count, and pulmonary involvement are independent predictors of mortality.

The clinical outcomes of COVID-19 infection in patients with a history of thyroid cancer: A nationwide study

Mustafa Sahin et al.

Summary: The study showed that patients with a history of thyroid cancer did not have an increased risk of mortality or morbidity in COVID-19 disease. Furthermore, radioactive iodine therapy history and doses did not affect mortality or outcome in these patients.

Genetic variants are identified to increase risk of COVID-19 related mortality from UK Biobank data

Jianchang Hu et al.

Summary: This study identified 8 super variants associated with susceptibility to COVID-19 mortality through a genome-wide association study. These variants are related to cilia dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases, thromboembolic disease, and other conditions, providing potential directions for understanding the molecular pathogenesis of COVID-19 and the genetic basis of heterogeneous susceptibility.
