The owl that never left! Taphonomy of Earlier Stone Age small mammal assemblages from Wonderwerk Cave (South Africa)

Maria Dolores Marin-Monfort et al.

Summary: Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa is an exceptional site with a large collection of small mammal fossils dating back approximately 2 million years. Taphonomic studies have shown that Barn owls were the dominant predator during the Earlier Stone Age, leaving behind dense carpet-like surfaces of pellets. Analysis of small mammal assemblages from the cave has confirmed the integrity of the stratigraphic sequence and reinforced interpretations of palaeoecology.

Coping with arid environments: A critical threshold for human expansion in Europe at the Marine Isotope Stage 12/11 transition? The case of the Iberian Peninsula

Hugues-Alexandre Blain et al.

Summary: The findings suggest that climate has constraints on human settlement, particularly related to rainfall and environmental humidity. Hominin occupation in the Early and Middle Pleistocene was dominated by relatively humid wooded areas, but expanded towards more open arid areas later on. Based on estimated occupational niche, a maximum potential distribution for early hominins in Europe is proposed.

Contribution of small mammal taphonomy to the last Neanderthal occupations at the El Salt site (Alcoi, southeastern Spain)

Maria Dolores Marin-Monfort et al.

Summary: The El Salt site is one of the latest Neanderthal sites in the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula, and the disappearance of this human group is controversial and requires detailed studies. A taphonomic study at the site revealed the European eagle owl as the main predator involved in producing the micromammal assemblages, with an absence of transport and reworking processes indicating a link between the disappearance of Neanderthals and increased aridity in the region.

Human Activities, Biostratigraphy and Past Environment Revealed by Small-Mammal Associations at the Chalcolithic Levels of El Portalon de Cueva Mayor (Atapuerca, Spain)

Juan Rofes et al.

Summary: This study investigates small-mammal remains from different archaeological units at a Chalcolithic site in Spain, identifying the early Chalcolithic context as intact and unpolluted, while the late Chalcolithic context units are prone to inter-pollution. Additionally, the unexpected presence of certain taxa with Upper Pleistocene allochthonous origin in the prepared floors is noted.
