New Persistent Opioid Use After Inguinal Hernia Repair

Ryan Howard et al.

Summary: A retrospective cross-sectional study found that 1.5% of patients developed new persistent opioid use after inguinal hernia repair, and filling an opioid prescription in the 30 days before surgery was the most significant risk factor for this complication.

Samuel J. Rubin et al.

Summary: The study shows a significant decrease in opioid prescriptions for tonsillectomy, parotidectomy, thyroidectomy, and direct laryngoscopy and biopsy in Massachusetts after the implementation of a prescription drug monitoring program. Patients did not require additional opioid refills post-implementation.

Laparoscopic-guided distal loco-regional anesthetic infiltration technique in TAPP inguinal hernia repair: a double-blind randomized clinical trial

Jose Vinas et al.

Summary: This study compared the novel laparoscopic-guided local anesthetic infiltration technique (LDAI) with ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane block (US-TAP) for patients undergoing elective TAPP hernia repair. Results showed that LDAI had shorter anesthetic and surgical times, with similar postoperative pain control and analgesic consumption compared to US-TAP.

Effect of Intraoperative Urinary Catheter Use on Postoperative Urinary Retention After Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair A Randomized Clinical Trial

Aldo Fafaj et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of intraoperative catheters on postoperative urinary retention (PUR) after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. The results showed that catheter placement did not reduce the risk of PUR, and there was an incident of urethral trauma in the catheter group, indicating a potential for low-rate catastrophic complications.

Narcotic Refills and Patient Satisfaction With Pain Control After Total Joint Arthroplasty

Jeffrey B. Stambough et al.

Summary: This study reviewed preoperative and postoperative narcotic prescriptions for 438 consecutive TJA patients using the state's mandatory opioid prescription monitoring program. Patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty, were aged 65 or older, and had Medicare coverage were more likely to receive fewer post-discharge narcotic refills. Patients with higher satisfaction tended to consume less overall opioids when needing a refill.

Association of the 2016 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Opioid Prescribing Guideline With Changes in Opioid Dispensing After Surgery

Tori N. Sutherland et al.

Summary: This study included 361,556 opioid-naive patients who underwent surgery and found a substantial decrease in postoperative opioid dispensing after the release of the 2016 CDC guideline, compared to an increasing trend in the previous two years. However, the absolute amounts prescribed remained high, indicating the need for further improvement in postoperative pain management.
