Gender Differences in Mental Health, Quality of Life, and Caregiver Burden among Informal Caregivers during the Second Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Germany: A Representative, Population-Based Study

Summary: This study compares the mental health, quality of life, and caregiving burden between male and female informal caregivers of older adults during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. The findings show that female caregivers experienced higher levels of anxiety and lower quality of life compared to male caregivers. However, after controlling for care tasks and time, gender differences in depression and caregiver burden were not significant. The level of anxiety among caregivers was influenced by the perceived danger posed by the pandemic, with men being more concerned about the care recipient's safety and women being more concerned about their own safety.

Hospitalizations During the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Recently Homeless Individuals: a Retrospective Population-Based Matched Cohort Study

The results show that compared to housed individuals, those with a recent history of homelessness had significantly higher rates of medical-surgical, non-elective, and psychiatric admissions. During the peak period of the pandemic, hospitalization rates decreased among housed individuals but remained unchanged among homeless individuals. Furthermore, non-elective hospitalizations for liver disease, kidney disease, and trauma increased significantly among homeless individuals.

Summary: Breast cancer, the second most common cause of cancer in women, affects people across different ages, ethnicities, and incomes. Studies have found that women with lower socioeconomic status and of Black and Hispanic ethnicity are more vulnerable to poor breast cancer outcomes and tend to be diagnosed at more advanced stages. Decreased use of screening mammography services has been observed in these underserved populations. Mobile mammography units can provide convenient screening services and early detection of breast cancer, especially in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Restoring and implementing accessible mobile screenings can help alleviate the impact of missed screenings.
