Development and use of the Australian reproductive genetic carrier screening decision aid

Emily King et al.

Summary: The Australian Mackenzie's Mission pilot study evaluated couple-based screening for approximately 1300 genes associated with around 750 childhood-onset genetic conditions, and developed a decision aid to support informed decision-making for couples. The Decision Aid was refined through a Delphi approach involving experts and subsequent cognitive talk aloud interviews, and was found to prompt discussion within couples and facilitate in depth consideration of screening, contributing to shared decision-making and feasibility of scaled-up implementation of RGCS.

Intrafamilial communication of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer genetic information in Italian women: towards a personalised approach

Maria Luisa Di Pietro et al.

Summary: The expansion of genomic testing has led to a greater need for genetic counseling and intrafamilial communication. A study conducted with Italian women found that factors such as age, living situation, and family communication style can influence the disclosure of genetic information within families. Understanding genetic counseling content is high among women, with a need for personalized approaches that consider family dynamics and relationships.

Communication about positive BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic test results and uptake of testing in relatives in a diverse Asian setting

Daphne S. -C. Lee et al.

Summary: Research on communication of BRCA1/2 results and uptake of testing in Asian populations is limited compared to Western societies. This study found that first-degree relatives were more likely to be informed and undergo testing, with sisters more likely than brothers to be informed and tested. The low rates of family communication and testing uptake suggest the need for interventions to encourage probands to inform all relatives and target male and second-degree relatives to increase informed decisions and accessibility to testing. Promotional strategies should be culturally sensitive for optimal outcomes.

Interventions Facilitating Family Communication of Genetic Testing Results and Cascade Screening in Hereditary Breast/Ovarian Cancer or Lynch Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Vasiliki Baroutsou et al.

Summary: Interventions designed to improve family communication of genetic testing results and cancer predisposition cascade genetic testing for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) and Lynch Syndrome (LS) show promise for efficacy. Future studies should focus on family-based approaches and include racially diverse samples.

A decision aid for additional findings in genomic sequencing: Development and pilot testing

Amanda S. Freed et al.

Summary: The study describes the development of a web-based decision aid to assist patients and research participants in making informed, values-based decisions about receiving additional results from genomic sequencing. The decision aid, called ORCA, was found to be highly readable and relevant in alpha testing, supporting informed decision making.

Patient and Family Preferences on Health System-Led Direct Contact for Cascade Screening

Nora B. Henrikson et al.

Summary: The study found that U.S.-based health system-led direct contact of relatives is acceptable to patients and families, should take a programmatic approach, including obtaining consent of relatives before conducting proband testing, as a complement to existing patient-mediated disclosure, and allowing relatives to control information.

Challenges of Genomic Testing for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancers

Lindsey McAlarnen et al.

Summary: With advancements in technology, germline genomic testing for HBOC has become more important in providing targeted treatment recommendations, risk reduction strategies, and support for at-risk family members. Challenges include managing increased genetic referrals, interpreting vast information from new testing methods like NGS, improving cascade screening strategies, addressing health disparities, and supporting patients emotionally through positive, negative, or indeterminate results.

Family communication of genetic test results among women with inherited breast cancer genes

Deborah Cragun et al.

Summary: The identification and communication of inherited breast cancer, especially among females with BRCA1/2 variants, can guide care. Younger participants, those with high self-efficacy in family communication, and individuals with BRCA1/2 variants showed higher rates of family communication. Additionally, higher rates of family communication and family testing were observed among closer kinship relatives.
