Headache associated with COVID-19: Epidemiology, characteristics, pathophysiology, and management

Summary: This review discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology, characteristics, and management of COVID-19-associated headache. Headache is a common clinical symptom of COVID-19, affecting over half of the patients, especially young patients and those with a history of previous headaches. The headache usually occurs early in the symptomatic phase and has similar characteristics to tension-type headaches. The possible pathophysiological mechanisms include viral injury, inflammatory processes, and other mechanisms. Commonly used drugs for treatment include analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Protracted headache after COVID-19: A case series of 31 patients from a tertiary headache center

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 31 patients who developed new or worsening persistent headaches after COVID-19 infection. The average duration of these headaches was 7.4 months, and most patients transitioned from episodic to chronic migraine. Additionally, there was a decrease in full-time employment, and the majority of patients who received preventive medication reported a decrease in headache frequency and/or severity.

Headache as a COVID-19 onset symptom and post-COVID-19 symptom in hospitalized COVID-19 survivors infected with the Wuhan, Alpha, or Delta SARS-CoV-2 variants

Epidemiological aspects of headache after different types of COVID-19 vaccines: An online survey

Summary: This study aimed to assess the frequency and characteristics of headaches following different types of COVID-19 vaccines. The highest frequency of headaches was reported with adenoviral vector vaccines, followed by mRNA vaccines and then inactivated vaccines. Recipients of adenoviral vector vaccines experienced longer latency between vaccination and headache onset and higher headache intensity compared to recipients of inactivated vaccines. Female sex and thyroid disease were significantly associated with vaccine-related headaches.
