Decoupled responses of above- and below-ground stability of productivity to nitrogen addition at the local and larger spatial scale

Guo-Jiao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of nitrogen addition on the temporal stability of aboveground and belowground net primary productivity (ANPP and BNPP) in a grassland ecosystem. The results show that nitrogen addition decreases the stability of ANPP, but does not affect the stability of BNPP and NPP at the investigated scales. Additionally, spatial asynchrony of ANPP and BNPP among communities provides greater stability at a larger scale and is not affected by nitrogen addition.

Stimulation of ammonia oxidizer and denitrifier abundances by nitrogen loading: Poor predictability for increased soil N2O emission

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen loading significantly increased the abundance of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in soil, but this did not directly correlate with changes in soil N2O emission. Abiotic factors such as mean annual precipitation, soil pH, soil C:N ratio, and ecosystem type were key in regulating nitrogen-induced changes in soil N2O emission.

An integrated belowground trait-based understanding of nitrogen-driven plant diversity loss

Qiuying Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates how nitrogen enrichment affects belowground plant traits and subsequently influences aboveground responses. Different plant functional groups exhibit varied rhizosheath formation and responses to nitrogen enrichment, with grasses and sedges expanding their rhizosheaths to adapt to nitrogen-rich environments. Grasses create a different microenvironment around their roots compared to forbs, enhancing their tolerance to stresses induced by nitrogen enrichment. The lack of protective rhizosheaths in forbs makes them more sensitive to such stresses, contributing to their disappearance under nitrogen-enriched conditions.

Community response of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to extreme drought in a cold-temperate grassland

Wei Fu et al.

Summary: Climate extremes have a significant impact on AM fungal communities, with higher sensitivity to intense drought. The sensitivity of AM fungal communities can be explained by soil moisture, plant richness, and aboveground productivity. Plant communities play a regulatory role in mediating the response of AM fungal communities.

Natural 15N abundance of ammonium and nitrate in soil profiles: New insights into forest ecosystem nitrogen saturation

Geshere Abdisa Gurmesa et al.

Summary: Assessment of nitrogen (N) saturation in forests is important for understanding ecosystem response to global changes. A conceptual model of N saturation stages was developed based on ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification rates, soil ammonium and nitrate concentrations, and N-15 enrichment patterns in the soil profile. Using data from forests in eastern Asia, it was found that the fraction of nitrate in total inorganic N indicated a gradient of N saturation, and N-15 enrichment patterns provided information on mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification rates.

Forested riparian buffer environmental variables are more important than size for species functional diversity in production forests

Summary: Retention of forested buffers around streams is a common management technique to protect aquatic resources and ecosystem services. However, buffer size does not significantly affect the functional diversity of spiders and vascular plants. Other buffer variables have direct effects on their functional diversity.

Elevational shifts in foliar-soil δ15N in the Hengduan Mountains and different potential mechanisms

Qiong Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the determinants of foliar-soil delta N-15 and N transportation rates at different elevations in the Hengduan Mountains. The results showed that vegetation N limitation was stronger at medium high elevations due to higher microbial immobilization and shifts in vegetation preference. Surprisingly, soil delta N-15 was not strongly correlated with foliar delta N-15, indicating that litter input may not be the main driver of soil delta N-15. Instead, soil nitrification and denitrification played a more significant role in shaping the pattern of soil delta N-15 along the elevational gradient.

Plant genome size modulates grassland community responses to multi-nutrient additions

Yang Peng et al.

Summary: Grassland ecosystems cover a significant portion of the global land area and contain a large amount of soil organic carbon. Adding nutrients to grasslands is crucial for maintaining their productivity, ecosystem services, and biodiversity. A study conducted in Inner Mongolia found that increasing nitrogen and phosphorus levels primarily enhances aboveground net primary productivity in species with large genome sizes, leading to competition for light and a decline in species richness in species with small genome sizes.

Effects of nitrogen addition on plant-soil micronutrients vary with nitrogen form and mowing management in a meadow steppe

Heyong Liu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen addition and mowing can significantly influence micronutrient cycling in grassland ecosystems, with different forms of nitrogen compounds affecting micronutrient status in plant-soil systems. The responses of plant-soil micronutrients to nitrogen addition varied with mowing and different nitrogen compounds, mainly regulated by soil physicochemical properties and plant growth. Different magnitude of micronutrient responses in plants and soils highlight the importance of considering various nitrogen compounds in biogeochemical models when projecting the effects of nitrogen enrichment on grassland ecosystems.

Fungal succession in decomposing woody debris across a tropical forest disturbance gradient

Gbadamassi G. O. Dossa et al.

Summary: Fungi play a crucial role in decomposing woody debris in forests. Changes in fungal diversity and composition were found to influence wood decomposition rates, with wood species and termite presence being key factors impacting fungal diversity. Although fungal diversity was not a significant predictor of wood specific gravity loss, functional replacement was identified as a potential mechanism explaining similar decomposition rates across disturbance gradient.

Summary: The study revealed that the volatilization process depleted 15N in NH3, with δN-15-NH3 values ranging between -46.0% and -4.7% during the whole process. Additionally, there was a significant isotopic fractionation during soil volatilization, with NH3 volatilization rate being negatively correlated with soil NH4+-N content.

Increases in substrate availability and decreases in soil pH drive the positive effects of nitrogen addition on soil net nitrogen mineralization in a temperate meadow steppe

Yanyu Hu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increasing N addition rates significantly affected soil net N mineralization and nitrification rates, primarily driven by the enhanced quantity and quality of soil substrates and decreased soil pH. Nitrogen addition rates were positively correlated with the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria amoA gene, but negatively correlated with other N-related functional genes.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in nitrogen isotopes in plants and soil under nitrogen addition, revealing shifts in nitrogen forms and accelerated nitrogen cycling, as well as increased plant reliance on soil NO3-; microbial and plant nitrogen preferences converged, leading to increased competition between them; the changes in plant litter delta C-13 were associated with the abundance of plant species, while plant species' delta C-13 remained unaffected by nitrogen addition.
