Carbon Fluxes in the Coastal Ocean: Synthesis, Boundary Processes, and Future Trends

Minhan Dai et al.

Summary: This review examines the current understanding of the global coastal ocean carbon cycle and provides a new quantitative synthesis of air-sea CO2 exchange. The study highlights the importance of coastal and open ocean carbon sinks in mitigating climate change and meeting the target set by the Paris Agreement. The review also identifies challenges and knowledge gaps in projecting future changes in the coastal ocean carbon cycle.

The land-to-ocean loops of the global carbon cycle

Pierre Regnier et al.

Summary: This study assesses the land-to-ocean cycling of carbon through inland waters, estuaries, tidal wetlands and continental shelf waters, and highlights the impact of neglecting these changing carbon fluxes on carbon storage estimates. Key knowledge gaps are identified for future assessments to reduce uncertainties in understanding the global carbon cycle.

Coastal eutrophication drives acidification, oxygen loss, and ecosystem change in a major oceanic upwelling system

Faycal Kessouri et al.

Summary: Global change is causing warming, acidification, and oxygen loss in the Southern California Bight, exacerbated by the discharge of anthropogenically enhanced nutrients from a coastal population of 23 million people. Through simulations, it was found that local land-based and atmospheric inputs, particularly those enhanced by human activities, drive biogeochemical changes, leading to increased phytoplankton biomass, primary production, and subsurface respiration rates in the coastal waters during summer.

Biogeochemical variability in the California Current System

Curtis Deutsch et al.

Summary: The study utilized a model to analyze the mean state and variability of marine biogeochemical and ecosystem processes in the California Current System from 1995 to 2010. The model simulations captured well the seasonal and interannual variations in biogeochemical properties and rates.

A Dynamically Downscaled Ensemble of Future Projections for the California Current System

Mercedes Pozo Buil et al.

Summary: The study downscales three Earth System Models (ESMs) to produce climate projections for the California Current System (CCS) under high emission scenario, finding an intensification of upwelling winds, overall surface warming, nitrate enrichment, and dissolved oxygen decrease. While all models agree on future changes in offshore waters, differences arise in coastal regions, resulting in varied responses of biogeochemical variables. Downscaled models reflect trends in ESMs, but differ more for biogeochemical than physical variables.

Simulated Global Coastal Ecosystem Responses to a Half-Century Increase in River Nitrogen Loads

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that increased river nitrogen loads have impacts on the global coastal nitrogen inventory, net primary productivity, and benthic detrital flux. Ecosystems with long residence times and strong nitrogen limitation are the most sensitive to added nitrogen.

Historical increases in land-derived nutrient inputs may alleviate effects of a changing physical climate on the oceanic carbon cycle

Fabrice Lacroix et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increased terrigenous nutrient inputs can enhance global marine NPP, offsetting the decrease due to increased upper ocean stratification. The relative increase in coastal ocean NPP is mainly driven by increased riverine inputs, exceeding 100% in some regions. The effects of enhanced terrigenous nutrient inputs also extend offshore, resulting in increased NPP in the open ocean.

A baseline of terrestrial freshwater and nitrogen fluxes to the Southern California Bight, USA

Martha Sutula et al.

Summary: Time series were compiled for terrestrial nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, iron, and silica fluxes to the Southern California Bight. The study found that point source discharges are the dominant nitrogen source, with wastewater treatment upgrades reducing organic nitrogen loads and inorganic nitrogen loads holding constant.

Evaluation of high-resolution atmospheric and oceanic simulations of the California Current System

Lionel Renault et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 16-year hindcast solution of the California Current System using a coupled physical and biogeochemical model along the U.S. West Coast. The model is validated against various fields and shows good agreement with observational data. The simulation highlights the importance of high-resolution atmospheric and oceanic models for accurately representing oceanic processes and interactions.
