A revised, late Palaeozoic glacial time-space framework for eastern Australia, and comparisons with other regions and events

Christopher R. Fielding et al.

Summary: A timeframe of glacial and nonglacial intervals in the Carboniferous and Permian systems of eastern Australia was published in 2008. It has been widely used to understand glacial events in the region and compare with events in other parts of the world. This paper presents a reappraisal of the previous timeframe based on new age data and presents updated information on the timing of glaciations and climate changes in eastern Australia.

Carboniferous and Permian integrative stratigraphy and timescale of North China Block

Boheng Shen et al.

Summary: This study critically reviews the chronostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the latest Carboniferous and Permian in the North China Block and provides insights into the stratigraphic correlation and geological events. The study also estimates the amplitude of sea-level changes and highlights the favorable period for coal accumulation during the late Carboniferous and early Permian. The climatic shift during the Permian is attributed to the northward migration of the Pangea and the closure of the Paleo Asian Ocean.

Records of chemical weathering and volcanism linked to paleoclimate transition during the Late Paleozoic Icehouse

Dawei Lv et al.

Summary: The demise of the late Paleozoic ice age is the only recorded transition from an icehouse to a greenhouse state, and a study on chemical weathering and volcanism in North China Craton reveals a warming event during the early Asselian period, with volcanic activity being closely related to carbon isotope perturbations and climate change.

Records of organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg) and volcanism linked to changes in atmospheric pCO2 and climate during the Late Paleozoic Icehouse

Jing Lu et al.

Summary: The Late Paleozoic Icehouse (LPI) provides insights into climate and environmental predictions by studying the relationship between climatic and environmental changes during this period and perturbations in atmospheric pCO(2). Through investigating volcanic records and organic carbon isotope composition in North China Platform, it was found that negative carbon isotope excursions are associated with peaks in Hg/TOC ratio and rising pCO(2) levels, suggesting a volcanic origin for these perturbations.

Records of volcanism and organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg) linked to changes in atmospheric pCO2 and climate during the Pennsylvanian icehouse interval

Jing Lu et al.

Summary: The late Paleozoic ice age is the only recorded icehouse-to-greenhouse transition on Earth, with volcanic activity closely related to glacial-interglacial climate cycles. High atmospheric pCO(2) levels correlate with interglacial periods, while low pCO(2) and cooling correspond to glacial intervals.

High-latitude ice and climate control on sediment supply across SW Gondwana during the late Carboniferous and early Permian

N. Griffis et al.

Summary: The study shows that glacial evidence in the Kalahari region is limited to the Carboniferous, with glacially influenced deposits in the earliest Permian; while changes in sediment supply to the Parana Basin were contemporaneous with shifts in the ice record of SW Gondwana. The influx of sediments into the Parana Basin during deglaciation events indicates an expansion of the catchment area, with changes in sedimentation patterns across different time periods.

High-precision U-Pb age constraints on the Permian floral turnovers, paleoclimate change, and tectonics of the North China block

Qiong Wu et al.

Summary: The Permian marine-terrestrial system of the North China block provides insights into the evolution of northern temperate ecosystems during the transition from icehouse to greenhouse. Through high-precision U-Pb geochronology, it was found that the dominance of continental red beds, aridification of climate, and disappearance of coals and tropical flora in the North China block occurred earlier than previously thought. A long hiatus in the early Kungurian to mid-Guadalupian was associated with tectonic convergence and led to the loss of diverse Cathaysian floras and invasion of monotonous Angaran floras under arid conditions. Volcanism during the Cisuralian may have played a role in global warming and aridification after the late Paleozoic ice age.

Pace, magnitude, and nature of terrestrial climate change through the end-Permian extinction in southeastern Gondwana

T. D. Frank et al.

Summary: Rapid climate change during the end-Permian extinction led to the collapse of Glossopteris forest-mire ecosystems, accompanied by intense chemical weathering and peak warmth. This was followed by gradual warming and intensification of seasonality over a period of approximately 1 million years. The earliest Triassic climate was significantly warmer than the late Lopingian, with landscapes becoming drier gradually, providing refugia for moisture-loving terrestrial groups.

Late Palaeozoic cyclothems-A review of their stratigraphy and sedimentology

Christopher R. Fielding

Summary: Cyclothems are distinctive repetitive stratal rhythms characteristic of the late Palaeozoic in the palaeotropical realm of Laurussia, recording repeated alternation of marine and nonmarine depositional conditions. They comprise arrays of terrigenous clastic, organic, and chemical/biochemical lithologies and are influenced by seasonal tropical climates and large-magnitude sea level fluctuations. Analysis of cyclothemic successions can contribute to a fuller understanding of sea-level excursions and palaeoclimatic changes during the late Palaeozoic.
