Effect of Irrigation, Nitrogen Sources, and Metribuzin on Performance of Maize and Its Weeds

Hani Saber Saudy et al.

Summary: Weeds, competing with crop plants, limit the utilization of water and nutrients, thereby affecting crop productivity and quality. This study evaluated the response of maize grain yield, nutrient constituents, and associated weeds to different irrigation intervals, weed control treatments, and nitrogen forms. The results showed that irrigating every 15 days reduced the biomass of grasses and total weeds, leading to increased plant height, ear length, grain yield, and nutrient content. Hoeing and metribuzin were effective in controlling broadleaf weeds, while ammonium nitrate enhanced grain weight, ear length, and maize leaf potassium content. These findings suggest that combining irrigating every 15 days with hoeing or metribuzin and using ammonium sulfate as the nitrogen form can effectively decrease weed growth and maintain crop productivity.

Influence of Silicon Forms on Nutrients Accumulation and Grain Yield of Wheat Under Water Deficit Conditions

Emad M. M. Salem et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of different forms of silicon (Si) to mitigate drought-induced reduction in wheat yield and changes in nutrient accumulation. The results showed that applying Si reduced zinc and manganese accumulation and increased Si content in wheat plants. Spraying any form of Si significantly increased all agronomic traits of wheat compared to the control. Irrigation at 100% of crop evapotranspiration ratio was the most effective treatment for enhancing wheat productivity.

Change in the photochemical and structural organization of thylakoids from pea (Pisum sativum) under salt stress

Kunal Dhokne et al.

Summary: Salt stress has adverse effects on the photosynthetic process and thylakoid structure in Pea. Under high salt conditions, the net photosynthetic rate decreases, water use efficiency improves, and the photochemical efficiency of both photosystems is reduced. Non-photochemical quenching is decreased, while non-regulated energy dissipation increases, leading to the inactivation of PSII. Salt stress also affects the electron transport chain, causing disorganization of thylakoid grana and altering the macro-organization and super complexes of thylakoids.

ZmPP2C26 Alternative Splicing Variants Negatively Regulate Drought Tolerance in Maize

Fengzhong Lu et al.

Summary: This study characterized a maize PP2C family member, ZmPP2C26, which negatively regulated drought tolerance in maize by dephosphorylating ZmMAPK3 and ZmMAPK7. Alternative splicing generated ZmPP2C26L and ZmPP2C26S isoforms, with ZmPP2C26S showing higher phosphatase activity. The expression of ZmPP2C26L and ZmPP2C26 was inhibited by drought stress, and the zmpp2c26 mutant exhibited enhanced drought tolerance. However, overexpression of ZmPP2C26L and ZmPP2C26S decreased drought tolerance in Arabidopsis and rice. Phosphoproteomic analysis revealed that ZmPP2C26 also altered phosphorylation levels of proteins involved in photosynthesis. This study provides insights into the mechanism of PP2C in response to abiotic stress.
