LA-ICP-MS/MS Single-Spot Rb-Sr Dating

Delia Rosel et al.

Summary: Due to advancements in reaction cell technologies, LA-ICP-MS/MS can now be used to collect extensive Rb-87/Sr-86 and Sr-87/Sr-86 data sets, allowing for the measurement, calculation, and validation of Rb-Sr ages from individual laser spots. This offers potential for provenance studies and the creation of age maps with unprecedented spatial resolution.

Constraints from in-situ Rb-Sr dating on the timing of tectono-thermal events in the Umm Farwah shear zone and associated Cu-Au mineralisation in the Southern Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia

Ahmad Redaa et al.

Summary: Constraining the tectonic history and timing of major shear zone structures in the Arabian Shield is critical for better understanding the distribution of ore deposits. In this study, in-situ Rb-Sr dating was used to determine the age of the Umm Farwah Shear Zone and the timing of Mount Ablah mineralisations. Results indicate that the shear zone was initiated at around 651 Ma, with mineralisation occurring between 626 and 611 Ma, and greisen formation at 601 +/- 12 Ma. The study also identified two main groups of mineral phases, providing insights into the tectonic history and origin of ore deposits in the Arabian Shield.

Characterisation of Reference Materials for In Situ Rb-Sr Dating by LA-ICP-MS/MS

Yujin Jegal et al.

Summary: Rb and Sr mass fraction and Sr-87/Sr-86 isotope ratio measurement results for four reference materials obtained from SARM in France are presented. These materials can be used as calibration materials for in situ Rb-Sr dating. Heterogeneity within the materials is mainly related to inclusions of minerals and chemical substitutions. Proposed working values of Sr-87/Sr-86 and Rb-87/Sr-86 ratios are recommended for Rb-Sr dating using these materials.

Revisiting Glauconite Geochronology: Lessons Learned from In Situ Radiometric Dating of a Glauconite-Rich Cretaceous Shelfal Sequence

Esther Scheiblhofer et al.

Summary: The scarcity of well-preserved and directly dateable sedimentary sequences poses a challenge to inferring the Earth's paleo-environmental evolution. By improving the methods for measuring and interpreting the formation ages of glauconite, a mineral with potential for providing absolute stratigraphic ages for sedimentary sequences, researchers have successfully obtained stratigraphically significant ages for glauconite from a Cretaceous shelfal sequence in northern Germany. The study confirms that glauconite, even in mineralogically complex grains, can preserve pristine ages under burial diagenetic conditions, making it a valuable archive for paleo-environmental reconstructions and direct sediment dating.

In-situ Rb-Sr dating of celadonite from altered upper oceanic crust using laser ablation ICP-MS/MS

Christiaan T. Laureijs et al.

Summary: This study utilized a new method to determine the ages of celadonites in oceanic crust and found that most celadonite formed within the first 20 million years after crustal accretion, with no systematic variation based on crustal age, sedimentation history, or depth in the crust.

An Automated System for Measuring In Situ K-Ar Ages

Jesus Sole

Summary: The completely automated system described in the study uses laser ablation for argon extraction and potassium measurement, as well as mass spectrometry for argon determination. It is designed for ease of use, low cost, and reasonable precision, and is suitable for a variety of exploratory geology applications. The system has been successfully applied to different sample matrices and is capable of performing one hundred K-Ar analyses every 24 hours.

In situ Rb-Sr dating by collision cell, multicollection inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry with pre-cell mass-filter, (CC-MC-ICPMS/MS)

Dan Bevan et al.

Summary: The Proteus mass spectrometer enables accurate Sr isotope ratio measurements and in situ Rb-Sr dating by combining multiple mass spectrometry techniques. It demonstrates successful "chemical resolution" of Rb from Sr, highlighting the importance of pre-cell mass-filtering in laser ablation Sr-87/Sr-86 analysis. By utilizing an uncertainty model, it is shown that Proteus outperforms traditional single collector CC-ICPMS/MS for samples with low Rb/Sr ratios or younger ages.

Assessment of elemental fractionation and matrix effects during in situ Rb-Sr dating of phlogopite by LA-ICP-MS/MS: implications for the accuracy and precision of mineral ages

Ahmad Redaa et al.

Summary: The study found that the accuracy of in situ Rb-Sr dating of igneous phlogopite mineral using LA-ICP-MS/MS technology is typically within about 3%, with occasional higher errors ranging between 4% to 8%. The bias and uncertainty in the Rb-Sr ages may be related to matrix effects between Mica-Mg and MDC, as well as different physical properties. Developing improved nano-powder reference materials with better matrix matching is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of in situ Rb-Sr dating.
