Predicting Fluid Flow Regime, Permeability, and Diffusivity in Mudrocks from Multiscale Pore Characterisation

Summary: In this study, small-angle neutron scattering experiments were conducted on 71 samples from 13 different sets of mudrocks across the globe to capture the pore structure and develop fractal models to predict transport properties based on pore size distributions. The results show that transport phenomena in mudrocks are pore size-dependent, with different flow regimes developing in micropores, meso- and macropores based on hydrostatic pore pressures. The new model of pore size-dependent transport and integrated transport properties using fractal models provides a systematic approach to better understand fluid flow and transport phenomena in mudrocks on the reservoir and basin scale.

Two-Phase Flow Mechanisms Controlling CO2 Intrusion into Shaly Caprock

Summary: Geologic carbon storage in deep saline aquifers is a promising technique to mitigate climate change. The sealing capacity of caprock is crucial for long-term containment of CO2. Experimental and numerical simulation results show that excessive injection of CO2 drives free-phase CO2 into caprock samples, but the increase in permeability along the drainage path is insufficient to advance the free-phase CO2, indicating that the caprock sealing capacity is unlikely to be compromised. In the long term, CO2 mainly migrates through slow molecular diffusion into the brine, and the tortuous nature of shaly caprock further restricts the diffusive flow, favoring safe underground storage of CO2 over geological time scales.

CO2 plume and pressure monitoring through pressure sensors above the caprock

Summary: Commercial-scale development of CO2 geological storage requires robust monitoring methods to track the injected CO2 plume and ensure storage. Pressure monitoring above the injection zone can detect potential CO2 leaks. This study presents a model to predict pressure changes in the caprock due to hydraulic communication and partially undrained loading. The results show that pressure changes in the caprock are closely related to the advancement of the CO2 plume. This research demonstrates the feasibility of pressure monitoring to track CO2 plumes and emphasizes the need for high precision pressure measurements for correct interpretation.
