Novel EMIC Wave Propagation Pathway Through Buchsbaum Resonance and Inter-Hemispheric Wave Interference: Swarm Observations and Modeling

I. P. Pakhotin et al.

Summary: The Swarm mission observed in situ conjugate electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves with a complex and unusual pattern of energy distribution. These waves exhibit a peak at mid-latitudes near the source and a secondary peak at a lower L-value. A wave propagation model suggests that the secondary peak may be explained by wave power redirection due to resonance, resulting in interference with EMIC waves propagating from the opposite hemisphere.

Statistical Study of EMIC Wave Propagation Using Space-Ground Conjugate Observations

Sung-Jun Noh et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the characteristics of EMIC wave propagation and filtering from the source region to the ground. The study utilized magnetometers aboard GOES 13 and the SNK station in northern Canada to obtain simultaneous observations. The results revealed differences in wave properties and environmental factors between coincident and non-coincident wave events.

3D full wave fast wave modeling with realistic HHFW antenna geometry and SOL plasma in NSTX-U

N. Bertelli et al.

Summary: This paper reports significant advancements in the ability to model and understand the interaction between RF waves and SOL plasma in the NSTX-U device. The study incorporates a full torus 3D scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma simulation, antenna and core plasma, and a cold plasma model. The findings show the importance of including realistic antenna geometry for capturing realistic experimental situations, including fully 3D wave field effects and antenna plasma interactions.

On the Impacts of Ions of Ionospheric Origin and Their Composition on Magnetospheric EMIC Waves

Justin H. Lee et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that accurately specifying the ions of ionospheric origin and their composition can greatly improve the understanding of magnetospheric EMIC waves. Further research is needed to investigate unresolved questions using future modeling capabilities or when new missions or instrumentation capabilities are developed.

Superposed Epoch Analysis of Nighttime Magnetic Perturbation Events Observed in Arctic Canada

Mark J. Engebretson et al.

Summary: Superposed epoch analyses were conducted on large nighttime magnetic perturbation events observed in Arctic Canada in 2015 and 2017. The study found that only the IMF Bz component showed consistent temporal variations before MPEs, and most of the MPEs did not coincide with large-scale peaks in ionospheric electrojets. More disturbed values of various parameters appeared post-midnight than pre-midnight.

Summary: The study identified and categorized EMIC wave events observed by the Van Allen Probes and ERG/Arase satellites, highlighting distinct characteristics at different regions. This suggests that EMIC waves in the magnetosphere can be generated by different free energy sources.

Low Frequency ULF Waves in the Earth's Inner Magnetosphere: Statistics During Coronal Mass Ejections and Seeding of EMIC Waves

Konstantin Gamayunov et al.

Summary: The statistical analysis of low frequency ULF waves in Earth's inner magnetosphere reveals that the waves can be categorized into transverse and compressional waves, with two sources being internal magnetospheric and external. The dominance of transverse power in the 6-24 h MLT sector and compressional power in the 12-24 h sector is observed, with plasmasphere showing higher powers compared to high L shell region. Additionally, a wave energy cascade from low frequency ULF waves to higher frequency EMIC waves is identified.
