Effects of simulated surface freshwater environment on in situ microorganisms and their methanogenesis after tectonic uplift of a deep coal seam

Yueguo Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the significant enhancement of gas production capacity of microorganisms in deep coalbed water with high TDS content, and analyzes the changes in microbial community structure and gene function. Through these investigations, the methane-producing process of microorganisms in highTDS coalbed water is recreated.

Experimental study of advantages of coalbed gas bioengineering

Xianbo Su et al.

Summary: Coalbed gas bioengineering (CGB) is a fermentation engineering that converts organic components of coal to methane, enhancing coalbed gas production. Laboratory simulations using different rank coals showed that all ranks of coal have potential for biomethane production. The bioconversion process also enhanced coal seam desorption capacity for methane and increased coal permeability.

Impact of Microbially Enhanced Coalbed Methane on the Pore Structure of Coal

Di Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the pore structure characteristics of No. 3 coal seams in Qinshui Basin after microbial treatment were analyzed. It was found that microorganisms participated in the degradation of coal reservoirs and promoted the production of methane gas. The modification of meso-macropores was more significant, resulting in stabilized pore diameter, smoother pores, decreased specific surface area, and increased pore volume, which are beneficial for the adsorption and production of coalbed methane (CBM) after microbial treatment.

Impact of Stimulated Fractures on Tree-Type Borehole Methane Drainage from Low-Permeability Coal Reservoirs

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: Tree-type hydraulic fracturing is a promising method for the effective development of methane in low-permeability coal seams. A multi-scale methane flow model was developed to evaluate the impact of hydraulic fractures on the drainage effect. The results showed that highly permeable fractures greatly enhanced the methane drainage efficiency.

Biodegradation of early thermogenic gas and generation of secondary microbial gas in the Tieliekedong region of the northern Tarim Basin, NW China

Haijiao Fu et al.

Summary: Important progress has been made in CBG exploration in the Kuqa-Bay coalfield in the northern Tarim Basin. In this study, gas and water samples in the Tieliekedong region were collected and analyzed to determine the genesis of the CBG, the formation pathways of the microbial gas, and the source of the coalbed water.

Surface physico-chemistry governing microbial cell attachment and biofilm formation on coal

Nur Hazlin Hazrin-Chong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of surface physico-chemistry on microbial cell attachment on coal, revealing that natural lignite and subbituminous coals offered the most conducive surface for cell attachment. Coal pretreatments significantly affected the interaction between cells and coal, with peroxide treatment showing favorable coal-cell interaction. Additionally, cell colonisation was strongest on lignite due to its relatively high van der Waals surface energy component.

Adherent microbes in coal seam environments prefer mineral-rich and crack-associated microhabitats

Andrew G. McLeish et al.

Summary: Biogenic coal seam gas serves as a bridge fuel in the global transition to renewable resources, with microbial activities forming a significant portion of contemporary gas reserves. Research has shown a selective preference for microbial attachment to the surface of coal where crack-associated and mineral-rich areas are present, enhancing our understanding in generating gas reserves for energy security. Further investigation into the mechanisms behind this preference could provide valuable insight into subsurface microbial catabolism.

Daping Xia et al.

Summary: The study found that FeS2 and FeCl2 can promote methane production in biological methanation. Additionally, the addition of FeCl2 or FeS2 can increase the ammonia nitrogen content and the number of microorganisms, thereby enhancing biomethane production.
