Cyclical geothermal unrest as a precursor to Iceland's 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption

Olafur G. Flovenz et al.

Summary: Understanding the source of geodetic deformation in volcanic areas is crucial for hazard assessment. In this study, the researchers analysed the deformation and seismicity before the Fagradalsfjall eruption in Iceland. They found that cyclic intrusions of magma into a permeable aquifer explained the observed deformation, gravity and seismic data. The ingress of magmatic gas into the aquifer caused cyclical deformation and primed the system for the eruption.

Deformation and seismicity decline before the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption

Freysteinn Sigmundsson et al.

Summary: Increased rates of deformation and seismicity are well-established precursors to volcanic eruptions. However, the pre-eruptive patterns of deformation and seismicity vary widely. A recent eruption in Iceland was preceded by a period of tectonic stress release, resulting in a decline in deformation and seismicity before the eruption. The eruption was accompanied by high rates of deformation and seismicity, as well as strike-slip earthquakes, indicating the emplacement of a magma-filled dyke. The reduction in deformation and seismicity can be attributed to the systematic release of stored tectonic stress and the shallowing of active magma emplacement.

DFENS: Diffusion Chronometry Using Finite Elements and Nested Sampling

Euan J. F. Mutch et al.

Summary: The DFENS method combines finite element numerical model and Bayesian inversion to reduce uncertainties in diffusion timescales; analyzing products of the Baroarbunga volcanic system in Iceland with this method reveals olivine and plagioclase provide mixing and disaggregation timescales of less than 1 year.

Timescales of crystal mush mobilization in the Baroarbunga-Veioivotn volcanic system based on olivine diffusion chronometry

Alberto Caracciolo et al.

Summary: This study utilizes multi-element diffusion chronometry in olivine macrocrysts to reveal the timescales of magmatic processes, finding that with time, mixing times have become shorter approaching recent times. The macrocryst content and rock composition also vary over time, with early-Holocene samples being richer in macrocrysts, while historical units exhibit a more relaxed mush fabric.
