Review on the interactions of arsenic, iron (oxy)(hydr)oxides, and dissolved organic matter in soils, sediments, and groundwater in a ternary system

Adeleh Aftabtalab et al.

Summary: High concentrations of arsenic in groundwater are primarily influenced by arsenic-rich sediments underground. Various processes drive the mobilization of arsenic in aquatic ecosystems, with dissolved arsenic exhibiting high affinity for dissolved organic matter. Understanding the complex interactions and biogeochemical cycling of arsenic, dissolved organic matter, and iron oxides is essential for preventing arsenic contamination spread in aquatic resources.

The effect of biochar on the migration theory of nutrient ions

Jikai Lu et al.

Summary: As soil acidification increases, nutrient ion utilization decreases. This study found that using biochar as an amendment can improve acidified soil through physical and ion-exchange adsorption processes. The 10% biochar ratio group performed the best, reducing outlet volume and nutrient ion accumulation in leachate and surface soil. This research provides a theoretical basis for large-scale application of biochar.

Adhesion of Bacillus salmalaya and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on oil palm kernel shell biochar: A physicochemical approach

Aaronn Avit Ajeng et al.

Summary: Biochar has been found to be an effective carrier for microorganisms due to its physicochemical properties and microenvironment. In this study, the adhesion behavior of Bacillus salmalaya 139SI and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NBRC 15535 on oil palm kernel shell (OPKS) biochar was investigated. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model accurately described the adhesion process, and the adhesion equilibrium was reached after 80 minutes with a cell concentration of 10^8 CFU/g. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy images revealed the formation of microcolonies and a biofilm structure on the biochar surface, and electron dispersive spectroscopy analysis suggested that bacteria attached to mineral-rich regions on the biochar surface, which may enhance their survival.

Coconut husk biochar amendment enhances nutrient retention by suppressing nitrification in agricultural soil following anaerobic digestate application

Jidapa Plaimart et al.

Summary: The study found that coconut husk biochar can slow down nitrate leaching in soil, reduce the abundance of nitrifying archaea and bacteria, and help improve soil nutrient conditions. This is relevant for the development of a more circular rural economy with waste minimization, renewable energy production, nutrient recycling, and reduced water pollution from agricultural land.

Inhibition of phosphate sorptions on four soil colloids by two bacteria*

Zhi-neng Hong et al.

Summary: The sorption of inorganic phosphate on soil colloids can be significantly reduced by bacteria, with differences in efficiency depending on the type of bacteria. Bacteria increased the negative charge of soil colloids, leading to a decrease in phosphate sorption. Physical and chemical interactions between bacteria and soil colloids contribute to this inhibition.

Soil aggregate size-dependent relationships between microbial functional diversity and multifunctionality

Shun Han et al.

Summary: Soil stability and aggregates are crucial for soil fertility and microbial diversity, affecting ecosystem functions and services. This study found that soil aggregates play a key role in driving microbial functional gene diversity and ecosystem functions, with organic fertilizer enhancing the relationship between gene diversity and multifunctionality, while inorganic fertilizer reduces it. The findings also suggest that differences in resource availability within soil aggregates influence ecosystem functions, highlighting the importance of soil aggregation for regulating soil nutrition and microbial diversity.

Tao Li et al.

Summary: This study found that stearic acid-modified bentonite has the highest bacteria adsorption capacity and affinity, while the different characteristics of plant growth-promoting bacteria lead to differences in their interface interactions with carriers. Through extended-DLVO theory and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis, the adsorption mechanisms and principles between Rs-2 and SL-44 and carriers were revealed.
