Summary: The decrease in foliar delta N-15 does not necessarily indicate a decline in N availability, as foliar [N] remains constant in the studied plant species from southern China.

Mycorrhizal tree impacts on topsoil biogeochemical properties in tropical forests

Milagros Barcelo et al.

Summary: There are differences in carbon and nutrient properties between ecosystems dominated by different mycorrhizal associations in tropical regions. The abundance of EcM (ectomycorrhizal) trees is positively correlated with soil nutrient concentrations, climatic conditions, and microbial abundance.

Global Soil Gross Nitrogen Transformation Under Increasing Nitrogen Deposition

Lei Song et al.

Summary: This study reveals that soil nitrogen transformations respond differently to different nitrogen deposition rates. While low and high nitrogen additions stimulate gross N mineralization and nitrification rates, the responses of microbial N immobilization to nitrogen deposition vary. NH4+ immobilization is inhibited under low nitrogen additions, while NO3- immobilization is stimulated under high nitrogen additions.

Summary: The study found that climate, soil properties, and gross nitrogen dynamics have different interactive effects on biomass production in natural grasslands, and climate influences biomass production by directly and indirectly regulating soil gross nitrogen mineralization.

Stoichiometric imbalance and microbial community regulate microbial elements use efficiencies under nitrogen addition

Jing Li et al.

Summary: In a temperate forest, low nitrogen addition significantly increased microbial CUE in organic soil while high nitrogen addition significantly reduced it; meanwhile, microbial CUE in mineral soil did not change under low nitrogen addition but significantly increased under high nitrogen addition. Microbial NUE decreased with increasing nitrogen addition rate in organic soil, but showed an opposite pattern in mineral soil.

Patterns and drivers of global gross nitrogen mineralization in soils

Ahmed S. Elrys et al.

Summary: Soil gross nitrogen mineralization is mainly controlled by climate and soil properties, with factors such as microbial biomass, total carbon, total nitrogen, precipitation, bulk density, and soil pH playing key roles. Total nitrogen accelerates mineralization by increasing microbial biomass, while lower bulk density and higher precipitation also stimulate the process. The study suggests that microbial population size, soil substrate availability, soil pH, precipitation changes, and land use can interact to influence nitrogen mineralization, ultimately impacting ecosystem productivity and nitrogen loss to the environment.

Carbon limitation overrides acidification in mediating soil microbial activity to nitrogen enrichment in a temperate grassland

Qiushi Ning et al.

Summary: Higher ecosystem nitrogen inputs can suppress soil microbial biomass and respiration, which are mainly driven by carbon limitation rather than soil acidity. As nitrogen input rate increases, microbial demand for carbon strengthens, leading to more severe carbon limitation. These findings provide clear evidence for nitrogen-induced microbial carbon limitation.
