Assessment of the soil fertility status in Benin (West Africa)-Digital soil mapping using machine learning

Kpade O. L. Hounkpatin et al.

Summary: A soil fertility index map (SFIm) was developed using legacy data from Benin, with the cubist model performing slightly better than the quantile random forest model but exhibiting higher levels of local uncertainty. The distance to the nearest stream, among other topographic covariates, was found to have strong predictive ability for all soil properties, influencing the spatial distribution of the different classes of SFIm.

National-scale maps for soil aggregate size distribution parameters using pedotransfer functions and digital soil mapping data products

Naveen K. Purushothaman et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated 26 ASD models and parameterized them using 1373 soil ASD datasets from a large region in India. The lognormal distribution-based Buchan model was found to best describe the majority of the datasets. PTFs were developed using random forest and extreme gradient boosting models, and the feasibility of using soil properties estimated through digital soil mapping was validated. National digital soil maps for ASD parameters were successfully created based on DSM-derived soil properties for the first time.

On the occurrence of the worst drought in South Asia in the observed and future climate

Saran Aadhar et al.

Summary: The study found that the worst soil moisture drought in South Asia occurred in 2002, affecting more than 65% of the land and leading to a decline in rice yield. Climate projections show that the frequency of the worst droughts is expected to increase by 1.5 times in the future, with droughts likely to be more intense and widespread.

Legacy data-based national-scale digital mapping of key soil properties in India

Nagarjuna N. Reddy et al.

Summary: Mapping soil resources at a national scale in large countries like India is challenging due to limited soil data availability. This study produced digital maps of key soil properties across India using legacy data. The relationships between soil properties, bioclimatic factors, and terrain attributes were quantified, providing valuable information for soil management planning.

Enhancing the accuracy of machine learning models using the super learner technique in digital soil mapping

Ruhollah Taghizadeh-Mehrjardi et al.

Summary: Digital soil mapping approaches utilize a variety of machine learning models and super learning techniques to predict and map soil properties. By using permutation feature importance analysis, the contribution of individual covariates on the prediction can be quantified. Results showed that the super learner outperformed individual base learners in predicting soil properties, with geomorphic and groundwater data playing important roles according to PFI analysis.

Summary: This study introduces a dynamic soil functions assessment method to evaluate soils in the Lower Austrian Mostviertel region, showing that land use scenarios have a greater impact on soil functions compared to climate scenarios. Maintaining grassland positively affects soil habitat and soil carbon sequestration functions.

Contrasting influence of human activities on agricultural and hydrological droughts in India

Deep Shah et al.

Summary: The study found that human activities have different effects on agricultural and hydrological droughts in India. While human activities reduced the intensity of agricultural droughts, they intensified hydrological droughts. Excessive groundwater pumping and irrigation may exacerbate hydrological droughts, leading to significant environmental implications.

Suraj Jena et al.

Summary: Machine learning algorithms were used to develop a robust model for predicting saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) based on eight selected predictors, achieving accurate and cost-effective estimation in this study. The model outperformed existing PTFs both within and outside the study region, marking it as a superior and generalizable PTF for Ks estimation in various parts of the world.

Digital soil mapping of soil organic carbon stocks in Western Ghats, South India

S. Dharumarajan et al.

Summary: Spatial information on soil carbon storage is crucial for soil quality and environmental management. A study mapping soil organic carbon stock in a region of South India found better prediction for surface layer compared to deeper layers, with high-resolution maps outperforming existing products. The total estimated soil organic carbon stock was 917 Tg in the area studied, aiding in soil health assessment and land use planning.

Summary: The study presents a Bayesian inverse model for predicting soil available water capacity with sparse data, comparing the results to the Cubist machine learning model. The Bayesian method allows direct quantification of prediction uncertainties, which is a limitation of the Cubist method.
